Golf legend Dame Laura Davies believes Scottie Scheffler could complete the career Grand Slam after watching the World No.1 become the first player to successfully defend The Players Championship.

Four-time major champion Davies, 60, thinks now that Scheffler, 27, has sorted out his putting woes by switching to a TaylorMade Spider X mallet putter that he is now the man to beat in all four majors in 2024.

Scheffler, who has now won back-to-back titles on the PGA Tour since switching from a blade to mallet putter, already has a green jacket to his name following Masters victory at famed Augusta National in 2022.

Davies thinks Scheffler could very easily chalk up another three majors this season, or maybe even win all four if things go his way.

"He's on a different level," Davies said during Sky Sports Golf commentary at Sawgrass.

"As soon as he started holing those putts at Bay Hill the rest of the field must have thought 'oh we're in a bit of trouble here' because they know statistically he's No.1 in every category apart from the putting. But he now looks so relaxed over his putts.

"The fact he won this week with an injury in the third round and it was uncomfortable for him, but it was really nice to see on Sunday because he did feel more comfortable that he turned it into an 8-under 64, and the others have got their hands full now.

"Going forward, I don't think it's a long shot to say he's going to win at least two of the four majors this season, maybe even three, maybe even the Grand Slam.

"I really think it's possible."

No golfer has ever matched Bobby Jones' feat of a calendar year slam (1930). Jones won all four majors then: British Amateur, The Open, US Amateur and US Open.

Five players, however, have managed to land the career grand slam in the modern era: Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.

Woods and Nicklaus have each won three career grand slams and are the only players in golf's history to do that.

Scheffler needs to pick up the US PGA, US Open and The Open to complete the career grand slam this season.

Rory McIlroy is bidding to complete the career grand slam at The Masters next month, while Jordan Spieth will get the opportunity to do the same at the US PGA in May.

LIV Golf's Jon Rahm and Brooks Koepka also have good opportunities to wrap up the career grand slam this season.

Rahm needs to win the US PGA and The Open, while Koepka needs The Masters and The Open.

Scheffler is now a warm 9/2 favourite to win The Masters from 11-14 April.

Prices for Scheffler in the majors in 2024:

  • To win a major: 6/5
  • To win 2+ majors: 6/1
  • To win 3+ majors: 20/1
  • To win all 4 majors: 66/1
