Major champ hires brother as caddie for PGA Tour stop in Mexico after wedding ultimatum

Reigning U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark has revealed there is a special reason why his brother is caddying for him at this week's Mexico Open.

Wyndham Clark has revealed his brother jokingly threatened not to invite him to his wedding unless the PGA Tour star accepted his offer to caddie for him at the Mexico Open.

Clark headlines the 120-man field at Vidanta Vallarta and would ordinarily have trusted caddie David Pelekoudas on the bag.

The American linked up with Pelekoudas – affectionately known as 'Big Wave Dave' – after his split from John Ellis, and the pair enjoyed a hugely successful season.

Clark won the CJ Cup Byron Nelson before claiming his second US Open title in July, prevailing amid a hostile New York crowd. He then edged Rory McIlroy to win the BMW Championship.

But Clark will have his brother Brendan carrying the bag this week, with Pelekoudas unable to make it.

"Big Wave Dave is at a wedding in Italy and he asked, gosh, maybe like three, four months ago if I was going to play during this week," Clark told reporters on Wednesday.

"Initially I said I don't know if I'm going to play, then when we decided to. He was like, if you want me to not go [I won't go].

"It's one of his best friends so I was like: 'No, go and enjoy that'.

"Then my brother jumped on it and he said, I'm caddying for you, otherwise you're not coming to the wedding."

Clark added: "It's kind of fun for us. He lives in Kansas City, I live in Arizona. We see each other good amount but not as much as we would like, so this will be a fun, special week."

The 32-year-old wasn't expected to play this week, given he has already locked up starts in next year's signature events.

After the Tour Championship in August, Clark made the trip to Japan for the Baycurrent Classic.

"Everyone's asking me why I'm playing so much," he said. "I kind of like it keeps you sharp, doing some club testing.

"You know, the destinations that I'm playing at are pretty amazing."

Clark also called for the PGA Tour to branch out in the future.

"You see sports like the NFL branching out, NBA branches out," he said. "I think it's great. I would love if we had more events international. I like playing over in Europe, I love playing in Latin America.

"There's so many good golf courses here. I know the fans enjoy golf.

"I've been coming to Mexico for, gosh, 15 years as a family so I really enjoy this culture, the food and have played tons of good golf courses.

"Hopefully we continue to come here and even expand the amount of times we come down here."

Clark isn't the only player in the field that will have a new caddie this week.

According to Golfweek, Camilo Villegas has recruited former LIV Golf caddie Jose Campra, while Brian Dilley fills in for Karl Villips after leaving Spain's David Puig.

The biggest shake up belongs to Ben Griffin, who has linked up with Jon Yabrough, after the golfer decided to part ways with Alex Ritthamel.

Yarbrough had most recently been on the bag of multiple major champion Phil Mickelson.
