Cameron Young says his performance at the 2024 Valspar Championship was 'a big win regardless of the outcome'.

Young was once again in contention to claim his maiden PGA Tour title but came up agonisingly and cruelly short.

The 26-year-old, who is now in his third year on Tour, was in the driving seat and, at the very least, looked like he was heading for a playoff.

But disaster struck on the 72nd hole and he pulled his tee shot into the trees.

He somehow managed to escape, fatting a gap wedge up and around the overhanging branches to find the dancefloor. Then he three-putted.

Oops, Young did it again

The costly error allowed an emotional Peter Malnati a stress-free stroll up the 18th fairway minutes later to soak up his second PGA Tour win.

For Young, he will have to lick his wounds and go again after hitting an unwanted career milestone.

He has now finished second on seven occasions. That's the most runner-up finishes in the last 40 years without a win.

"I think I kept myself in it mentally really well," Young told reporters after the near-miss.

He said he was proud of the fact he managed to play the two tricky par 3s down the stretch in level par.

During his third round, he made a silly bogey at the 15th after missing the green right.

"I think I handled my own thoughts really well and, for me, that's a big win regardless of the outcome," he said.

Asked to describe his emotions, he added: "I don't know. Honestly, I realized I wasn't going to win pretty quickly, and I have a four-hour drive home with a one and a two year old, so whatever emotions are attached to that."

Young was the 2022 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year.

It was the same year that he finished one shot behind Cameron Smith at the landmark 150th Open at St. Andrews.

His other runner-up finishes include the 2022 Sanderson Farms Championship, 2022 Genesis Invitational, 2022 Wells Fargo Championship and the 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic.
