Red-faced PGA Tour pro tops his tee shot at Sanderson Farms Championship

Stephan Jaeger suffered the ultimate embarrassment in front of the TV cameras as he topped his drive during his first round at the Sanderson Farms Championship.

Every now and then, you'll see a professional golfer hit a shot that every average club golfer can relate to.

It might be a shank, or it might be hitting it thin or fat from a bad lie, we even saw a few of those from the best in the business at the Ryder Cup.

But rarely do you see a PGA Tour pro top his tee shot ... with a driver!

That's what happened to Stephan Jaeger during the first round of the Sanderson Farms Championship in Mississippi.

The German has been struggling to find any kind of form in recent months, missing the cut in four of his last seven starts.

Jaeger also had fans worried when he withdrew from the John Deere Classic in July after an opening 74, with some observers commenting that he "looked completely off" as he walked away.

The 36-year-old, who once shot a 12-under 58 on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2016, is making his first start since August at The Country Club of Jackson.

And he was going along nicely at 4-under par through 16 holes, but he then had his moment to forget as he attempted to launch his drive down the 17th fairway.

Perhaps conscious that a few of his previous tee shots had been blocked to the right, Jaeger flat-out topped his drive, and his ball didn't even reach the fairway.

The PGA Tour's shot tracker measured his drive at 102 yards, leaving him with 313 yards to the hole.

Jaeger did manage to limit the damage to a bogey-5, and a par at the last capped a 3-under 69 - just four shots off the lead.

At least he hadn't lost his sense of humour in a short interview after his round.

He said: "A lot of solid, some weird s***, made some nice putts, it was good!"
