Rory McIlroy makes unsurprising announcement
World number two Rory McIlroy, 34, has confirmed he will be in the field for the 2024 Horizon Irish Open on the DP World Tour.
Rory McIlroy has confirmed he will be playing this year's Irish Open.
McIlroy will be hoping to make amends at Royal County Down over 12-15 September.
The last time the tournament was staged there - in 2015 - he missed the cut. He won the tournament, at the K Club, a year later.
McIlroy placed T-16 in the Irish Open last season. The tournament was won by Sweden's Vincent Norrman.
"Since making my first appearance at the Irish Open nearly 20 years ago, it has been such a special tournament to play in, but it will be doubly so for me this time round," said McIlroy.
"I'm incredibly excited to have the opportunity play in this year's Irish Open at a venue so close to home. Royal County Down is a fantastic venue and I still have some great memories from the 2007 Walker Cup."
"The crowds are always so supportive of all the Irish golfers taking part and the atmosphere is unlike any other we have at a golf tournament.
"Time and time again the fans prove that they are some of the best in the world and I can't wait to see them out in support of us again."
McIlroy has started the 2024 season in superb form. He threw away a victory at the Dubai Invitational with a loose tee shot at the 72nd hole.
But a week later he won the Dubai Desert Classic for a record-breaking fourth time.
