Si Woo Kim agonisingly fell short of becoming the 15th player in history to card a sub-60 round on the PGA Tour in the second round of the CJ Cup Byron Nelson at TPC Craig Ranch.
Kim, who resides in Texas, found himself at 12-under par for the round as he boarded the tough par-4 18th.
After splitting the fairway and with adrenaline pumping, Kim sailed the green with his approach shot and then failed to get up and down to save par.
It all added up to a brilliant 11-under 60 though for a new course record, one that sends Kim marching into a five-shot lead entering the weekend at 18-under par.
"It was a great round," said Kim, who made 12 birdies thru 17 holes before his sole bogey of the day at 18.
"I knew guys were going low before the round, I was hoping to go low but not that low."
He added: "I try to stay aggressive with my second shot on 18 but was maybe a bit too pumped."
The round of 60 matches Kim's all-time low on the PGA Tour.
Kim also shot a second-round 60 when he went on to win the first of his four career PGA Tour titles at the 2016 Wyndham Championship.
A total of 14 players have recorded sub-60 rounds, with Jim Furyk the only man to shoot a round of 58 (2016 Travelers Championship). Furyk also shot a 59 at the 2013 BMW Championship.
Kim takes a commanding five-shot lead over world number one and defending champion Scottie Scheffler, Sungjae Im, Kensei Hirata and Wyndham Clark.
Scheffler, playing alongside Kim for the first two rounds, fired an equally impressive 63 on Friday to surge up the leaderboard to 13-under par.
Kim spoke of how much fun he had out there with his good pal Scheffler, whom he regularly practices with during their home matches.
"It's always fun to play with him," Kim said of Scheffler.
"We joke with each other, give each other some trash talk. I always love to play with him, and always good to learn from him. It's great to be paired with him."
On holding a five-shot lead entering the weekend, Kim said: "Yeah, was trying to run as far away as I could today, but I've got to keep going low. I've just got to play my golf and we'll see."
Elsewhere, Jordan Spieth recorded his lowest round of the season with a 62 to move into contention at 12-under par entering his home event.
Brooks Koepka slipped back on the board with a 69 to fall to tied 15th on 10-under par.
