Matt McCarty hit the front on day one of the Truist Championship with a brilliant eight-under 63 at Quail Hollow Club, and he set a new PGA Tour record in the process.

McCarty, 28, made eight birdies and a bogey in a round that saw him become the first ever player in the PGA Tour ShotLink era to hole three putts of more than 50 feet in a single round.

McCarty is seeking a second PGA Tour title having won his first at the Black Desert Championship in 2024.

He arrived in Charlotte off three consecutive top-12 finishes on the PGA Tour.

The left-handed American holds a narrow one-shot lead over South Korea's Sungjae Im, who still has one more hole to play due to a weather delay.

A logam group of players comprising Nicolai Hojgaard, Kristoffer Reitan, Nick Taylor and Harry Hall are a further two shots in a tie for third on five-under par.

Sepp Straka is also on five-under but faces a testing six-footer for par on the 18th when play resumes.

England's Alex Fitzpatrick continued his impressive recent play with a four-under 67, a score that was matched by his compatriot Tommy Fleetwood.

Cameron Young, who won last week's Cadillac Championship, finds himself at three-under par with one more hole to play.

Elsewhere, world number two Rory McIlroy made 17 consecutive pars before making his sole birdie of the round at his final hole, the par-4 ninth.

McIlroy is a record four-time winner at Quail Hollow, but he will need to step on the gas already at seven shots off the early pace.

McIlroy is making his first start since becoming the first player in history to successfully defend the Masters last month.

The tee times for the first two rounds have been adjusted from two-balls to three-balls as a result of inclement weather earlier on Thursday.

The Truist Championship marks the sixth of eight Signature Events of the season.

There is a huge $20m prize purse on the line, with $3.6m going to the winner.
