Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk teases huge announcement: "We realise we have a problem"

Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk has revealed the United States is set to overhaul the qualification system for the 2027 contest at Adare Manor. 

Furyk's Team USA will collide with Luke Donald's Europe in County Limerick next September. 

The red, white and blue will enter the 46th edition of the contest as heavy underdogs having not won in hostile territory since 1993.

Furyk told Golfweek that he plans to overhaul the points system to ensure he has the strongest possible group of automatic qualifiers. 

As is standard, six players will qualify automatically and Furyk will fill up the rest of his squad with six wildcards. 

He refused to go into specifics about the changes but told the publication it's "going to be big". 

Furyk will announce the changes after the conclusion of the PGA Tour's play-offs at the end of the month. 

“We realise we have a problem," he added. 

"Right now everything is working off of money. Purses are so out whack.

"The landscape has changed so much in the last five years. 

"We need to come up with a fair assessment of how to identify those six players. 

"I think we are going to end up with a point system of some sort.”

What changes could be announced?

Golfweek report that Furyk is likely to outline a system that is designed to ensure greater emphasis on recent form. 

For example, Wyndham Clark won the 2026 U.S. Open and is likely to be in the mix for the automatic places next season. 

But Furyk wants a system whereby Clark isn't given too much credit as he could be out of form in 15 months' time.  

The PGA Tour veteran pointed to his own experience when making the 2011 Presidents Cup team. 

He described that season as his worst. 

But he made the squad purely on his performances the year prior having won the FedEx Cup and being crowned the player of the year. 

Furyk has already outlined Ryder Cup issues

In April, Furyk was named as the surprise successor to Keegan Bradley after Tiger Woods turned down the role. 

He previously captained the side in Paris in 2018 when Europe sealed a dominant 17½-10½ victory.

Furyk was heavily criticised in the aftermath of the defeat as his four captain's picks registered just two points from 12 matches. 

Speaking to reporters during the PGA Championship, he outlined how he planned to address their glaring problem.

"We're like 6-20 in foursomes the last three matches," said Furyk. 

"Right now, that's first and foremost on my mind. 

"We cannot continue to dig the holes we are on Friday and Saturday. 

"We've liked the foursomes first in the past. 

"The Euros made a key move in Rome and actually put that session first, for the first time in a long time. 

"They realised that they thought they had an advantage, and it showed glaringly."

Furyk also believes their needs to be more continuity in the leadership team. 

He told the Dan on Golf show last week he likes the idea of the Presidents Cup captain also leading the team at the Ryder Cup. 

But he acknowledged that is difficult as the Ryder Cup is run by the PGA of America when it is held in the U.S. and the Presidents Cup is a PGA Tour event. 

Elsewhere, Furyk has already hired the renowned stats guru, Justin Ray, to spearhead a new data team in advance of the matches.

Europe confirm qualification process

Elsewhere, Ryder Cup Europe have confirmed their qualification process. 

The race to make Donald's team begins later this month at the British Masters.

Eligible DP World Tour members will earn Ryder Cup points across DP World Tour and PGA Tour events until the qualification period concludes on Sunday, August 22, 2027. 

The final qualifying events will be confirmed once both tours release their 2027 schedules later this year.

The top six players on the Ryder Cup Points List at the end of the qualification period will automatically secure their places in Team Europe.

Donald will then complete his 12-man squad with six captain's picks during the week beginning 30 August 2027.
