"I hear that a lot from the media" - Jim Furyk dismisses Presidents Cup claim

Jim Furyk says it's disrespectful to say the United States team will treat the forthcoming Presidents Cup as Ryder Cup warm-up. 

The 56-year-old has been appointed as Keegan Bradley's successor and his Team USA will lock horns with Luke Donald's Europe next September in Ireland. 

First, though, Furyk will assist Team USA captain Brandt Snedeker at the 2027 Presidents Cup over 18-20 September at Medinah Country Club. 

The red, white and blue have been utterly dominant in the biennial event since its inception in 1994 and are widely expected to beat the Internationals for the 11th time in a row. 

Snedeker has been urged to blood some new talent next month against Geoff Ogilvy's International team to help them prepare for the contest in County Limerick.

But Furyk insisted on a recent appearance on the Dan on Golf podcast that it diminishes the Presidents Cup to suggest it is just a tune-up for the Ryder Cup.

"I hear that a lot from the media, folks talking about it," he said. 

"But that takes so much away from a great event in the Presidents Cup and it's kind of a smack in the face to the international team. They have been growing and getting better.

"It's a wonderful event on its own. From us a U.S. side, what you are trying to say is very viable, in that we don't look at it from our perspective as much as Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup and two separate events. For us it's the United States team."

Furyk said he had previously recommended Stricker for the role of Presidents Cup captain. 

He also wouldn’t be opposed to seeing the U.S. Presidents Cup captain take the reins of the Ryder Cup as well.

But the trouble is both events are run by different organisations. 

"Our captains such as Davis Love, Stricker, Freddie Couples, Jay Haas, we have all learned from those folks and tried to keep the process and that continuity going," added Furyk. 

"Maybe it could happen in the future where a Presidents Cup captain goes back-to-back at the Ryder Cup.

"There is a big, heavy lift with the captain so for the last three or four months I have been working really hard on the Ryder Cup. 

"To now set that down and put it to the side for a while, and then focus on the Presidents Cup would be a bit difficult.

"There are some plusses and minuses to it. 

"I think it could be done, but it would take some continuity for US to pull that off. 

"Both are run by separate organisations, so therein lies the toughest part, because you are working with two separate groups."

Furyk impressed by young stars

Over the last few weeks, several young Americans have stepped into the winners circle on the PGA Tour. 

Michael Thorbjornsen, 24, finally broke through at the Rocket Classic whilst Michael Brennan, also 24, scooped the Wyndham Championship. 

Jackson Koivun, 21, won on his third start as a professional at the 3M Open by holding off a charging Scottie Scheffler. 

"I heard a stat saying that the last time three Americans won three weeks in a row under the age of 25 was 2017," said Furyk. 

"Those guys were Jordan Spieth, Xander Schauffele and Bryson DeChambeau, so three pretty good ones. 

"I think Grayson Murray was also in there, so four guys"

He added: "I love it. I love the fact that we have got these young guys coming out. They are so prepared right out of college.

"They are going to put some stress on our wily veterans and I think it does interject a huge level of excitement.

"Having that wide-eyed, bushy-tailed but ready to go – like Scottie Scheffler at Whistling Straits. I kind of love that look.

"We had a young team there, when you look back, I think we might have had five or six rookies on that team.

"That was one of the criticisms of that team going on but they came out not scared at all and played some golf.

"I think a good mix of that youth and fire and also some wily veterans that put their arms around them and show them the ropes a little bit, possibly make some great pairings."
