U.S. Open Final Qualifying results: Max Homa and Rickie Fowler denied in playoff

Rickie Fowler and Max Homa were two notable PGA Tour names who failed to come through U.S. Open Final Qualifying on Monday. 

Fowler and Homa were defeated for the sixth and final spot in a five-man playoff at Kinsale Golf and Fitness Club in Ohio.

PGA Tour pro Cameron Young won the playoff, which also comprised Eric Cole and Chase Johnson.

Young holed a 12-footer for birdie on the first extra hole to advance. 

News emerged after that qualifier that Homa had split with his new latest caddie Bill Harke. 

Homa was seen carrying his own bag for all 36 holes without a caddie.

"I'd much rather talk about the golf instead of all the questions about the caddie," Homa told AP's Doug Ferguson.

"I'm good. Just hoofed it 36."

To further compund matters for Homa, he miserably three-putted the 36th hole for par to end up in the playoff. 

There was also U.S. Open heartbreak for Fowler but he could at least take consolation from punching his ticket into The Open following the Memorial Tournament on Sunday. 

Three-time major champion Padraig Harrington missed out on the playoff by a shot. 

U.S. Open Final Qualifying was held across 10 sites in the United States and played over a gruelling 36 holes on Monday 2 June.

Play was forced into a tense Tuesday finish over at the Emerald Dunes Golf Club qualifier in Florida. 

Ian Poulter's son Luke Poulter was agonisingly defeated by Austen Trunslow in a playoff. 

Luke will be a first alternate for the U.S. Open though, so all is not yet lost for him to achieve a first major appearance. 

European Ryder Cup hopeful Nicolai Hojgaard missed out in T8, as too did 2010 U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell in T16. 

European quartet Matt Wallace, Niklas Norgaard, Victor Perez and Thorbjorn Olesen all advanced through their qualifier at Lambton Golf & Country Club in Canada. 

Elsewhere, LIV Golf's Marc Leishman also made it safely through, albeit in a playoff against his LIV Golf peer Sebastian Munoz at Woodmont Country Club.

The U.S. Open will be contested at famed Oakmont Country Club from 12-15 June. 

Bryson DeChambeau will defend his title after having pipped Rory McIlroy to the post by one shot at Pinehurst in 2024.

World No.1 Scottie Scheffler will arrive as a red-hot 5/2 tournament favourite, however, having won three of his last four starts on the PGA Tour. 

Should Scheffler go on to win the U.S. Open then he will be just one leg away from completing the career grand slam at The Open. 

Former Masters champion Bubba Watson was going to compete in U.S. Open Final Qualifying but he withdrew without giving an explanation along with several other LIV recruits.
