PGA Championship LIVE: Scottie Scheffler in the mix, Rory McIlroy makes cut on number

PGA Championship LIVE: Follow live updates from the second round of the 2025 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club.

Scottie Scheffler carded a 3-under 68 in the second round of the PGA Championship to move within three shots of the lead heading into the weekend at Quail Hollow Club.

Rory McIlroy made the cut mark on the number after a 69, but it was a round that could and should have been so much better with two late bogeys.

The third member of the marquee group in defending champion Xander Schauffele carded a 70 to also narrowly make the cut.

It marks a 64th consecutive cut in the majors for Schauffele.

Scheffler finds himself at 5-under par thru 36 holes, while McIlroy and Schauffele are well down the board at 1-over par.

None of the world's top three have brought their A-games to Charlotte so far this week, but much can change with 36 holes left to play.

Jhonattan Vegas is still the player everyone has to catch as the Venezualan posted a 70 to nudge himself up to 8-under par.

Despite a shocking double on the final hole, Vegas holds a two-shot lead over Matthieu Pavon (65), Matt Fitzpatrick (68) and Si Woo Kim (64) heading into Saturday's third round.

Scheffler then finds himself a further shot back alongside a resurgent Max Homa, who equalled the best score of the week (64).

The rounds of 64 from both Kim and Homa marked both of their best rounds at a major.

Kim made an ace on the par-3 6th, which marked the second hole-in-one of the week and also the longest ace in major history at 238 yards.

Elsewhere, LIV Golf superstar Bryson DeChambeau pushed himself up the board with a 68 to move to 3-under par.

Six back but still in the hunt.

Aberg continues to fight back

L. Aberg +1 (13*)

Ludvig Aberg played the back nine (his front) in 4-over par.

He notched two birdies at the 11th and 14th but also etched three double bogeys onto his card at the 16th, 17th and 18th.

The Swede birdied the 1st and grabbed another shot back at the 3rd.

16:46
Pavon joins the party on 5-under

M. Pavon -5 (13*)

Excellent stuff from the Frenchman at the 12th, who rolls in birdie a putt from approximately 18 feet.

16:42
JJ Spaun moves into a tie for second place

Spaun -5 (14)

An excellent round from JJ Spaun has just got better with a birdie at the 14th hole.

Spaun was on the receiving end of a playoff loss to Rory McIlroy at The Players Championship in March.

16:38
Morikawa keeps going the wrong way

Thomas +1, Morikawa E (12*)

Justin Thomas is grinding hard here to make the cut.

A birdie on the 3rd hole helps Thomas massively.

Morikawa, on the other hand, is going the wrong way.

The former Open champion goes back to level par with his second bogey in a row.

The Block Party is officially over

PGA professional Michael Block produced a remarkable and unexpected performance at the 2023 PGA Championship with a top-15 finish in the major.

His final round included a slam dunk hole-in-one as he played alongside Rory McIlroy.

Block qualified for this year's PGA Championship but is currently dead last on the leaderboard on 16-over par.

He has four holes remaining in his second round.

Vegas moves two clear

Vegas -7 (7)

Our 18-hole leader gets back to level par for the day with a birdie at the 7th.

Despite finding the trees left of the 7th fairway, Vegas manages to advance his ball to just short of the green and gets down in two for a birdie.

He's two clear at the top.

16:14
Max Homa drops first shot of the day

Homa -4 (14*)

Max Homa's problems have been well documented this season.

At the turn of the year, he changed equipment and also switched coaches.

He was sacked by his caddie before the 2025 Masters and his former looper has now found a home with Collin Morikawa.

Homa showed signs of life at last month's Masters and he is continuing to show signs of improvement this week.

He played the back nine (his first) in 6-under par and moved to 7-under for the day at the par-4 3rd but he's just dropped his first shot at the par-3 4th.

Homa paid the price for missing the green right and couldn't save par from 18 feet.

16:09
Hovland finds a birdie

DeChambeau -2, Hovland -3 (8*)

Viktor Hovland drains a bomb from 30 feet on the 17th green.

His playing partner found a birdie on the previous hole but is now scrambling for par.

DeChambeau has 10 feet to remain at 2-under and four behind the lead.

16:08
Hatton drops further back

Hatton -1 (11*)

Hatton made a complete mess of the 18th hole, dropping three shots, and responded with a safe par at the 1st (his 10th).

But he's just dropped another shot as he pays the price for a wayward greenside chip that left him too much to do at the 2nd.

Bryson DeChambeau strikes

DeChambeau -2, Hovland -2 (7*)

When a hole is 526 yards long you would assume it's a par-5. But Quail Hollow is a bit of a beast.

It's not a problem for the content king though, who sends a booming drive some 359 yards down the middle of the fairway.

From there, the American knocks his approach to 17 feet and rolls in the birdie putt to climb the leaderboard.

15:46
Sergio Garcia fighting

S. Garcia +1 (7*)

Sergio Garcia desperately wants to make the 2025 European Ryder Cup team.

But to get selected, the former Masters champion needs to show captain Luke Donald some good form in the majors.

The Spaniard missed the cut at last month's Masters so he will be desperate to play more golf over the weekend here.

Garcia is battling hard today and he's just nabbed his third birdie of the day at the par-5 15th.

15:41
Back-to-back bogeys for Cam Davis

Davis -3 (12)

Cameron Davis shone on day one but the Aussie has just dropped two strokes at the 11th and 12th holes.

15:40
Hovland climbing

DeChambeau -1, Hovland -2 (6*)

Viktor Hovland takes advantage of the par-5 15th.

Despite finding the greenside trap with his second, Hovland splashes out to three feet and rolls in the birdie putt.

DeChambeau, as you would expect, finds the green in two strokes but three-putts from 50 feet for a par.

15:39
Trouble for Ludvig

Aberg +1, Spieth +4 (8*)

Water for Ludvig Aberg at the par-3 17th.

The Swede almost finds the water again with his third from the drop zone.

He walks off the green with a double bogey and drops down the leaderboard.

Jordan Spieth needs to get something going if he is going to make the 36-hole cut.

15:34
The 18th is causing chaos

C. Morikawa -2, Thomas +2 (10*)

Grim stuff for Collin Morikawa at the 18th, who becomes the latest victim of the treacherously difficult hole.

Morikawa tugs his drive left into the water and, because he has to take a drop in the thick rough, can only hack his ball a few yards down the fairway.

His fourth shot hits the green but spins back off.

Morikawa trudges off the green two shots later with an ugly six on his card.

He was going so well...

Justin Thomas found the fairway and the green in two shots but smashed his birdie putt through the break and cannot save his par.

15:30
Pavon grabs his fourth birdie of the day

M. Pavon -4 (9*)

Matthieu Pavon will harbour hopes that he can play his way onto the 2025 European Ryder Cup team.

The Frenchman's performance so far will impress captain Luke Donald.

Pavon rolls in his fourth birdie of the day at the par-4 8th.

He's kept a clean card so far.

15:27
Rai bounces back

Rai -5 (9)

Stunning iron approach from Rai at the 9th hole sets up a birdie putt from inside 10 feet .

Rai takes a few seconds to study his putt before rolling it home.

He gets back to within one shot of the leader.

15:22
Par for Collin

Morikawa -4 (8*)

Morikawa is playing nicely today.

The American dropped two shots on his final hole yesterday but he's already got them back after he picked up birdies a 10, 12 and the 16th.

He's safely in for par at the par-3 17th.

Can he avoid trouble at the 18th?

15:20
Aaron Rai slips back

Rai -4 (8)

Mistake from Rai at the 8th. The Englishman, known for wearing two gloves, is left with a 15-foot putt for park from the edge of the green.

He settles for bogey.
