PGA Championship LIVE: Scottie Scheffler in the mix, Rory McIlroy makes cut on number

PGA Championship LIVE: Follow live updates from the second round of the 2025 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club.

Scottie Scheffler carded a 3-under 68 in the second round of the PGA Championship to move within three shots of the lead heading into the weekend at Quail Hollow Club.

Rory McIlroy made the cut mark on the number after a 69, but it was a round that could and should have been so much better with two late bogeys.

The third member of the marquee group in defending champion Xander Schauffele carded a 70 to also narrowly make the cut.

It marks a 64th consecutive cut in the majors for Schauffele.

Scheffler finds himself at 5-under par thru 36 holes, while McIlroy and Schauffele are well down the board at 1-over par.

None of the world's top three have brought their A-games to Charlotte so far this week, but much can change with 36 holes left to play.

Jhonattan Vegas is still the player everyone has to catch as the Venezualan posted a 70 to nudge himself up to 8-under par.

Despite a shocking double on the final hole, Vegas holds a two-shot lead over Matthieu Pavon (65), Matt Fitzpatrick (68) and Si Woo Kim (64) heading into Saturday's third round.

Scheffler then finds himself a further shot back alongside a resurgent Max Homa, who equalled the best score of the week (64).

The rounds of 64 from both Kim and Homa marked both of their best rounds at a major.

Kim made an ace on the par-3 6th, which marked the second hole-in-one of the week and also the longest ace in major history at 238 yards.

Elsewhere, LIV Golf superstar Bryson DeChambeau pushed himself up the board with a 68 to move to 3-under par.

Disaster for Tyrrell

Hatton -2 (9)

What an absolute nightmare for the LIV Golf recruit.

Hatton chips to about three feet and taps in for a triple bogey.

It would be an understatement to say he looks mad as he marches to the 1st tee to begin his second nine.

There's plenty of time to recover but that was just so unnecessary from a player of his calibre.

It was wet!

Hatton -5 (8*)

Hatton takes a drop and his approach lands short right of the dancefloor. He's just chunked his greenside chip which almost rolls back to his feet.

This could be big number.

Stay clear of Tyrrell Hatton

Hatton -5 (8*)

Tyrrell Hatton's playing partners might want to steer clear of the Englishman for the next 10 minutes or so.

His tee shot at the 18th hole flies left and heads for the deep rough next to the stream.

No confirmation that his ball is wet yet but this doesn't look good.

Homa chips in for birdie

Homa -4 (9)

This is turning into some round from course specialist Homa.

He's just chipped in for birdie on the 18th, his ninth of the round, to move to 6-under for the day and to 4-under for the tournament.

It's not been a good couple of years for Homa but he's turning it on this week at a venue he has won on twice before on the PGA Tour.

Morikawa drains a brilliant birdie from 15 feet at the tough par-4 16th.

It moves the two-time major champion to 3-under for the round and to 4-under for the tournament.

Morikawa looks in complete control today.

His ball landed just shy of the cup and then trundled out to eight feet.

Rai -5 (7)

After two early bogeys, Rai has bounced back with three birdies to move into a tie for second.

Bogey for the leader

Vegas -6 (2)

It's a nervy start from our leader Vegas.

He misses a seven footer for par on the par-4 2nd to fall back to 6-under par.

Vegas is now just one ahead.

14:22
Hovland chunks two chips

Hovland -1 (3)

It's a disasterclass from Hovland in wedge play on the par-4 12th.

After coming up shy of the green. Hovland chunked two chips in a row before getting up and down for double.

It sends him back to 1-under par.

Homa another birdie!

Homa -3 (6)

This is unreal from Homa.

He's just drained another birdie on the par-5 15th.

Homa is now 5-under par for his first six holes and up to 3-under par for the tournament.

14:05
Hovland birdie

Hovland -3 (2)

Hovland sends a beautiful iron shot into six feet and he converts the birdie putt to move to 3-under par.

Four back for the European Ryder Cup hero who is seeking a first major title.

Bogey for Hatton

Hatton -4 (5)

Sloppy bogey for Hatton on the short par-4 14th.

Hatton found the water with his tee shot and he failed to get up and down for par.

The bogey sees Hatton fall back to 4-under par.

Mentally that is like two shots dropped on the 14th.

Homa off to an absolute flyer!

Homa -2 (5)

Max Homa has come to play on Friday!

Homa has just eagled the par-5 14th, his fifth hole of the round, after a stunning tee shot.

The eagle moves him to 4-under par for the day and to 2-under par in the tournament.

He is seeking a first ever major title.

Homa has history at Quail Hollow Club having won here on the PGA Tour in both 2019 and 2022.

13:44
Davis chips in for birdie

Davis -5 (6)

It's been a slow start for Cam Davis, but the Aussie has just chipped in from off the green on the par-3 6th.

Davis is back to level on the round and into a tie for second again.

13:43
Morikawa on the charge

Morikawa -3 (3)

Morikawa sinks a second birdie in three holes by curling in a 20-footer on the par-4 12th.

The claw grip is working well!

There should be a fair few birdies on the 12th hole today with the pin position nicely tucked away in a bowl on the front left of the green.

Then again, if you miss the slope beyond the pin, you will be more than happy to walk away with a two-putt par.

Morikawa's latest birdie lifts him up to 3-under par to move him four shots off the pace.

Big par save for Hatton

Hatton -5 (3)

Hatton had his back to the hole with his side-winding birdie putt from 35 feet.

He sent his ball down the slope to 10 feet beyond the hole but duly drained the par save.

Great start for the LIV Golf star.

13:23
Birdie for Morikawa

Morikawa -2 (1)

Morikawa sends a beautiful wedge shot into seven feet and then drains the birdie putt.

It moves Morikawa up to 2-under par.

The American is going in search of a third major title having won the PGA in 2020 and The Open in 2021.

13:22
EAGLE for Spieth!

Spieth +3 (1)

It's unlikely going to be Spieth's week as he goes in pursuit of the career grand slam, but he's made a fantastic start to his second round.

Spieth fired in a fairway wood to a few feet and then drained the putt for eagle to move up to 3-over par.

The cut is likely going to fall around 2-over par today so Spieth will be looking to make the weekend and then take it low over the final two days.

Hot start for Hatton

Hatton -5 (2)

This is some start for Hatton!

After a birdie on the 10th, his first hole of the round, the Englishman has added another on the 11th.

Hatton straight up to T2.

13:18
Davis bogey

Davis -4 (3)

It's a sloppy bogey at the 3rd for Davis, who falls back into a tie for third on 4-under par.
