Rory McIlroy was not best pleased when the hooter sounded as he made his way to the 1st tee ahead of the third round of the PGA Championship.

Rory McIlroy appeared less than impressed when the horn sounded for a suspension of play in the third round of the PGA Championship.

McIlroy, 36, was walking towards the practice putting green just 15 minutes before his initial Saturday tee time when the claxon sounded.

That was because of thunderstorms in the Charlotte area.

McIlroy was due to tee off alongside defending PGA champion Xander Schauffele at 8.25am local time.

But players will now tee off in three-balls as a result of the disruption in play today.

McIlroy and Schauffele will now tee off in the third round of the PGA Championship alongside Chris Kirk at 1.38pm (6.36pm BST).

All three players sit at 1-over par and nine shots off the pace currently set by Jhonattan Vegas on 8-under par.

Play will officially get underway in the third round at 11.43am (4.43pm BST).

As the horn sounded to suspend play ahead of the third round, McIlroy cut a frustrated figure as he walked over a bridge towards the putting green.

McIlroy turned round to his team and said 'f*** off' before a smile emerged on his face.

Watch McIlroy's reaction here:

McIlroy carded a 2-under 69 in Friday's second round.

But it was a day that could and should have been so much better.

McIlroy ended the round with two late bogeys to see him make the halfway cut on the number at 1-over par.

The Masters champion was seemingly frustrated with his finish as he declined media requests for interview after the second round.

A report has since emerged about McIlroy's TaylorMade driver, which has caused a bit of controversy

An interesting stat is that when McIlroy went on to win his first PGA Tour title at Quail Hollow Club in 2010, he was 1-over par and nine shots behind 36-hole leader Billy Mayfair.

Could history repeat itself this week?

The bookies have priced McIlroy up at 33/1 heading into the weekend in golf's second major of the season.
