Bryson DeChambeau heaped praise on PGA Championship hopeful Max Homa after the out of sorts golfer played his way into contention at the second men's major of the year.

Homa has been brutally honest about the state of his game as he tumbled down the world rankings since the 2025 campaign began.

The 34-year-old changed his equipment at the start of the year, switched golf coaches and was even sacked by his long-term caddie Joe Greiner before The Masters so as to preserve their friendship.

So far this season, Homa has missed five cuts but following his T12 finish at Augusta last month is showing signs of improvement.

An opening 73 followed by a 7-under 64 on Friday for Homa saw the American get into the top 10 on the leaderboard at Quail Hollow before moving day.

Homa has won two PGA Tour titles at Quail Hollow and will unsurprisingly back himself to now mount a challenge for the Wanamaker Trophy.

LIV Golf recruit DeChambeau is also in the hunt and is only five shots off the lead.

Homa told reporters in his post-round news conference on Friday that his willingness to be so open with his struggles has likely hindered his progress.

"It's been difficult because I felt like I was so broken," Homa said.

DeChambeau singled out Homa after his round. The reigning U.S. Open champion was a divisive figure during his PGA Tour career but has repeatedly declared since switching to LIV he believes he is showing his true colours.

"Sometime the openness can be scary and I commend Max for being that way, and I think people should respect him for that," DeChambeau said.

"I was very much like that early on. I'm a little more kind of focused on what I'm going to say, what I intend to say now, but I think it's great that you -- the more players that we can have that are more open out here, I think that's only going to benefit the game of golf."

DeChambeau added: "I think once you see how much good we actually can do for the game and what we're trying to do for the game, I hope people can see that for the light that it is.

"I commend Max for doing that. For me, I mean, yeah, you can say there's been times where I've been too open, and now it's a matter of just showing more of just who I am."

The start of the third round of the PGA Championship was delayed by bad weather at Quail Hollow.

DeChambeau is playing the third round of the major alongside Taylor Pendrith and Richard Bland.

Homa is among the later starters with Si Woo Kim and World No.1 Scottie Scheffler
