Yorkshire lands the 2027 European Amateur Championship in huge tournament coup
Formerly slated to take place at Woodhall Spa, the prestigious amateur event will now take place at North Yorkshire's famed Ganton Golf Club.

Big-name tournament golf doesn't often arrive in the stunning surrounds of Yorkshire, but a major boon for the area's golfing reputation has been announced today with England Golf confirming that the European Amateur Championship will take place at North Yorkshire's Ganton Golf Club in 2027.
The continent's most prestigious Amateur event was scheduled to arrive in England in 2027, with original plans for the event to take place at Lincolnshire's Woodhall Spa. However following revisions to plans to update its clubhouse, it was deemed that the club wouldn't be ready in time to host the event, and it has been moved to Ganton instead.
Set to take place at Finland's Linna Golf in May this year, the European Amateur counts some of the greatest golfers of all time among its past winners and podium finishers. Rory McIlroy won the 2006 European Amateur, while Sergio Garcia took home the title all the way back in 1995. Luke Donald, Lee Westwood and Tommy Fleetwood have all also held runner-up finishes at the event.
The European Amateur's arrival in England usually heralds good news for the nation's home golfers, with the the last two home tournaments yielding home winners. Challenge Tour player Alfie Plant won at Walton Heath in 2017, while Alice Hewson won the women’s equivalent event after a seven-hole play-off at Parkstone Golf Club in 2019.
The tournament winner, as always, will secure an exemption in the following year's Open Championship.
Ganton is one of England's most acclaimed courses, yet perhaps doesn't always get the plaudits it deserves compared to the better-known links courses around the British Isles.
It was originally laid out in the 1890s by St Andrews’ Tom Chisholm, but saw revisions from some of the most legendary names of the era in the decades that followed, with Harry Vardon, James Braid, Harry Colt and Alister Mackenzie all making alterations over the years.
A hybrid heathland and inland links course, it routinely places among the 100 best courses in the world, and is regarded among England's very finest inland courses thanks to its layout and proximity to the Scarborough Coast and North York Moors.
