Onitsuka Tiger is the latest brand to bring an iconic sneaker to the golf course

It's now going on for 60 years since Onitsuka, then a relatively little-known Japanese sport shoe manufacturer, changed sneaker history forever with the launch of the now-iconic Mexico running shoe. And to celebrate the model's diamond jubilee, the Mexico 66 is taking to the course for the first time.

The Mexico is, of course, one of the most instantly recognisable sneakers ever to hit the market. Initially released as a running shoe for Olympic athletes in 1966, the last 30 years have seen the shoe, and other Onitsuka Tiger models, become bona fide fashion and pop culture icons. Who could forget its star turn on the feet of Uma Thurman in Kill Bill, for instance?

Now, the brand (which operates as a subsidiary of Asics) is pushing into the golf space at a time where appetite for sneaker-inspired golf shoes has never been higher. They're starting, of course, with the most famous Tiger model of all, which has had a subtle rework aimed at bolstering its suitability for the course.

As a streamlined, low-profile running shoe, the Mexico isn't a shoe you'd necessarily associate with being ready for golf. However some may find the low drop and wafer-thin midsole perfect for achieving a low-to-the-ground feel. 

Onitsuka have also updated the outsole with a more aggressive pattern for added grip, along with a modified heel counter and reinforcement on the lateral side of the shoes to add stability throughout the swing. Stylistically, the larger winged tongue nods to the classic kilties that have long adorned golf shoes, while helping keep sand at bay.

The construction of the shoes remains grounded in the highest-quality leather providing natural comfort and weather resistance, and Onitsuka have even gone as far as getting the shoes certified as waterproof by the Japan Golf Goods Association.
