BENT-worth! Casey's golf shaft dilemma

Paul Casey holes the winning putting at Wentworth

Paul Casey, who jumped four places in the world rankings to No.3 following his one stroke victory in the BMW PGA Championship has revealed that while he uses modern heads in his Nike Red Victory irons, the shafts are several years old.

The odd fact came to light when he bent the shaft in his VR Forged Split Cavity 4-iron on a Wentworth tree trunk after a wayward drive at the 17th hole on the West Course in the second round.

"It's a Precision shaft and it was an old one (Precision Project X 7.0)," he said. "The company was later bought by True Temper and they don't make that shaft anymore. in fact they probably stopped making it two or three years ago."

Casey confirmed he couldn't replace just the 4-iron shaft with a different model, especially as he uses a mixed set of Nike VR irons - Nike VR Forged Split Cavity irons (4-5) and Nike VR Forged TW Blades (6-PW). He also uses and 54 and 60-degree VR wedges.

"I'm going to go to have to cannibalise one of my old sets (take the shaft out of the 2-iron)," he revealed. "Alternatively we might be able to straighten that one out; it's actually not that bad."

Casey made a bogey on the hole where he bent the shaft and struggled on the 18th as well because he didn't have the 4-iron for his approach. He also used a prototype Nike putter and the new Nike ONE Tour ball. It was his second win on the European Tour this season - he won in Qatar - and his third overall, having won the Shell houston open on the PGA tour and finished runner-up (to Geoff Ogilvy) in the WGC Accenture Match Play.

Also in his bag was the Nike SQ Tour (Mitsubishi Diamana Whiteboard 83x shaft) driver, Nike SQ II 3- and 5-woods (Mitsubishi Diamana Blueboard 103x shafts) and Nike ProCombo OS 3-iron. He wears Nike Air Zoom Elite II shoes and Nike Golf's Tour Collection clothing.
