Golf's 2008 Player of the Year Padraig Harrington - winner of both the Open and US PGA major titles - has signed a new multi-year contract to continue to play Wilson Staff clubs
The Chicago-based company whose clubs have captured more major titles than any other manufacturer, revealed that the popular Irishman will carry the distinctive red and white Wilson Staff bag for the foreseeable future as he attempts to complete a grand slam of Majors in 2009, starting with the US Masters in April.
“I’m absolutely delighted to have finalised an agreement with Wilson for a third time in my career and have great confidence that my Wilson Staff clubs can help me achieve even more victories in the years ahead,” said Harrington, who first signed with Wilson in 1998, when he turned pro after a distinguished amateur career. Since then he has moved from 78th to 4th in the Official World Rankings - winning 23 tournaments and amassing £14m in prize-money.
“Wilson is more than just a brand name – it’s a unique mixture of golfing heritage and modern research and development expertise that combines to produce outstanding clubs,” he added. “I love being part of a tradition that includes the likes of Sam Snead and Gene Sarazen. There’s no doubt in my mind that Wilson Staff clubs give me a genuine edge over my rivals for the top titles in the game and I’m sure that they have been a major factor in my success.”
Tim Clarke, general manager of Wilson Golf said: “This is a great day for us and the Wilson Staff brand. To have retained such a great player and such a special individual as Padraig as our main golf ambassador gives everyone associated with the company and our customers a tremendous boost and confidence in the future.
"But he was always looking at the bigger picture and what would help him achieve his next goals and decided that Wilson Staff clubs are the ones he wants to keep using. It’s a fearsome combination and one we hope will take Wilson Staff irons beyond the 61 Major wins.”
Harrington will continue to contribute to the development of Wilson Staff clubs, such as the latest Tw9 wedges and Smooth driver, as well as the new Di9 irons. For further information visit www.wilsonstaff.com.
