True to its tradition of updating its technology at the first opportunity and not missing a chance to offer golfers clubs featuring all of its latest developments, TaylorMade Golf is introducing the R9 SuperTri driver in March, hot on the heels of the R9 and R9 460 drivers, which proved such a hit in 2009.

While the R9 driver combined Flight Control (FCT) and Moveable Weight ( MWT) technology with three moveable weights in a 420cc head and the R9 460 driver introduced FCT in a larger, more forgiving head, the R9 SuperTri driver combines FCT and MWT with three moveable weights in a 460cc head.

"The first two drivers were created because TaylorMade didn't at that time have the ability to combine both FCT and MWT in a 460cc head," says Todd Beach, TaylorMade's senior director of metalwood development. "A year later, we do."

He says the R9 SuperTri was made possible by TaylorMade engineers saving enough weight to allow FCT and MWT to co-exist in a 460cc head - making more widespread use of Ultra-Thin Wall technology and a new, lighter FCT sleeve.

The result, says TaylorMade, is 'supreme adjustability, distance and forgiveness, making the R9 SuperTri easier to launch the ball higher and with more spin, while promoting the possibility of a side-to-side trajectory change of up to 75 yards.'

The R9 SuperTri clubhead claims to be sleeker and more aerodynamic than the R9 and R9460 heads but deeper than most of its competitors. It's also equipped with a lighter Fujikura Motore 60-gram shaft as standard. Priced at £329, the R9SuperTri driver includes three weights (one 16-gram two 1-gram weight) and face-adjusting torque wrench. It's available in 8.5, 9.5, 10.5, 11.5 degree lofts and five shaft flexes (L, M, R, S, X).

The R9 SuperTri TP (Tour Preferred version) features the same head as the R9 SuperTri but with a choice of ten premium shafts including the Aldila Voodoo, Mitsubishi Fubuki and Matrix Ozik. Recommended price is £379.
