2006 Ryder Cup

2006 The K Club
Europe 18.5 - US 9.5

United States arrived in Dublin as underdogs and then played like underdogs, as they succumbed to yet another nine-point drubbing and third successive defeat.

But while the Europeans equalled their record winning margin of two years previous, the 2006 Ryder Cup will be forever remembered for Darren Clarke - who accepted captain Ian Woosnam’s wildcard pick just weeks after wife Heather lost her battle with breast cancer.

The roar which welcomed Clarke on the first tee at The K Club sent a shiver down my spine and to see everyone - including opponents Phil Mickelson and Chris DiMarco – giving the Ulsterman a round of applause was very moving.

Spurred on by raw emotion, Clarke won three points from his three matches and, after beating Zach Johnson in the singles, looked to the sky with tears running down not only his cheeks, but every golf fan watching.
