Wyndham Clark and Erik van Rooyen began the day seven shots off the leaders at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, but their third-round score of 63 put them in contention.

Their round was headlined by an incredible shot that Clark played on the 16th hole, in the presence of an alligator.

The World No.145 took his shoes off and rolled up his trousers as he had to play his approach shot from the edge of a lake, which he played superbly.

His ball landed on the green and rolled just past the hole and although Clark settled for a par, it was a great shot that could've gone wrong on another day.

Unfortunately for the 27-year-old, as soon as he hit the shot he was sprayed with mud by the edge of the lake, but he and his partner van Rooyen saw the funny side.

Golf fans commented on the shot on social media:

"This is one of the most ridiculous shots I've ever seen," one fan said.

"Only way it coulda been better was if he was in his underwear," one fan commented.

"I thought the veteran move is to put on the rain jacket before attempting the shot in this situation," another fan said.

"I couldn’t even hit that off the tee," another fan commented.

"Such a shame he couldn't convert for a birdie," one fan said.

The pair birdied the par-5 second hole and then made five consecutive birdies on the front nine in what was an electric start. They added three more birdies on the back nine to complete their 9-under-par score and finish on 15-under-par for the tournament.
