Ten of the Best: Oscar Jacobson apparel

OSCAR JACOBSON has unveiled its stunning Autumn/Winter 2014 Golf Collection, featuring an array of garments merging the very best of Scandinavian style with high-tech performance-enhancing fabrics that are considerably kinder to the environment.

The Swedish apparel brand not only boasts a 111-year heritage in tailoring but also many decades’ experience in the golf market, from the early days of kitting out players on the European Tour in the 1970s, through to a long-term partnership with The Ryder Cup and, more recently, a relationship with Volvo to support the Volvo China Open.

Following a great reception to its spring/summer 2014 golf collection, which Golfmagic saw up close and personal at the PGA Show in January, OJ is now understandably moving confidently into the Autumn/Winter season.

Standout items in the new range include the new 2-in-1 Murray waterproof, which is a superb combination top comprising a wind and waterproof outer jacket made from a four-way stretch fabric. This provides maximum flexibility and movement with a separate inner bonded fleece.

Oscar Jacobson adds to the Murray waterproof: "When it’s crisp and bright, the inner fleece alone will do the job; when the dark clouds roll in, the outer jacket sits comfortably over the top to bring maximum weather protection."

The Murray is also joined in the waterproof department by Merlin, Mickey and Mallard. For warmth, Mulligan and Manny jackets are just the ticket, made from a lightweight PrimaLoft ® padding material that keeps the warmth in without adding unwanted and restrictive bulk.

Futhermore, the OJ Autumn/Winter Golf Collection’s base and mid-layers utilise fabrics free from harmful fluorocarbons, while the outer shells on its waterproofs are now free from perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), one of the nastiest chemicals used for water repellency.

OJ has also adopted a clever, spin yarn-dyeing method that saves both water and energy, with the pigment added to the melted polymer before the fibre is extruded into yarn. An added benefit is that this also makes the colours stronger and the garments less prone to fading.

The collection, available in three colour stories of Classic Resort, Contemporary Club and Black Watch, also comprises a comprehensive range of long and short-sleeve shirts such as Anton, turtleneck shirts like Elijah and Ron Thermal, 100% extra-fine Merino wool sweaters like Larry and Kent/Kent Tour (with its stylish argyle pattern on the left sleeve), and a number of half-zip topics in a variety of fabrics and styles to suit all weather conditions.

The real beauty of the new collection is that many of the garments can be combined to deliver OJ’s three-layer Weather Protection System (WPS): base layers that are light and breathable to wick moisture away and regulate temperature; mid-layers that retain body heat while further wicking away moisture; and outer layers that have been designed to repel the weather’s best efforts - whether rain, wind or worse - while allowing you to swing freely, so your scores don’t have to head south when the weather takes a turn.
