Rock and Warren's disqualification blues

Two golfers suffered the humiliation of being disqualified from the Irish Open over the weekend as scoring blunders cost them dearly.

Englishman Robert Rock was sent packing on day one after signing for a 6-under 65 – one off leader David Howell – and officials later discovered an error.

Rock, last year’s runner-up, mixed up his scores on the 14th and 15th holes at the Killarney – signing for a four and a three when he had taken a three and a four.

Tournament director David Probyn said: “The total was right but the hole scores he signed for were wrong so he was disqualified.”

It must have felt like a case of what goes around comes around for Rock, who took home the first prize of more than €400,000 last year after losing a play-off because winner Shane Lowry was an amateur.

In the final round, Scot Marc Warren was also disqualified after playing partner Mark Foster had put him down for a birdie three at the 13th and par four on the next instead of the other way round.

The former World Cup winner was not on the leaderboard at the time, having scored a final round 70 to keep him outside the top 30, but it still cost him nearly €20,000.
