USA makes major Ryder Cup qualifying change ahead of 2027 contest at Adare Manor

The United States has made another major change to its Ryder Cup qualifying system as it attempts to wrestle the trophy back from Europe at Adare Manor in 2027.

For the third consecutive Ryder Cup, the Americans have altered the way players will qualify for the team, with the new system based entirely on points earned during the year leading up to the contest.

Qualifying will begin at The American Express, the PGA Tour's 2027 season opener in California, and run through to the BMW Championship at Liberty National in New Jersey.

The top six players on the final points list will automatically earn their places on the U.S. team, while captain Jim Furyk will select the remaining six players after the season-ending Tour Championship. The biggest change is the way those points will be calculated.

Unlike the previous system, players will no longer earn Ryder Cup points based on their PGA Tour earnings. Instead, a fixed points distribution will be used depending on the status of each tournament.

Major championship winners will receive 3,000 points, while the winner of The Players Championship will collect 2,850.

Winners of PGA Tour signature events and the two postseason events will earn 2,250 points, while regular PGA Tour winners will receive 1,500 points.

Players will not be able to earn Ryder Cup qualifying points from opposite-field events.

Europe's Ryder Cup qualification is already underway

While the United States has now confirmed its new qualification structure, Europe's race for the 2027 Ryder Cup is already up and running.

It began at the Husqvarna British Masters hosted by Sir Nick Faldo last month. 

Eligible DP World Tour members earn Ryder Cup points throughout a year-long qualification process, with the campaign concluding on Sunday 22 August 2027.

As with the United States, the leading six players on Europe's Ryder Cup Points List at the conclusion of the qualification process will automatically qualify for the team.

Captain Luke Donald will then complete his 12-man squad by making six picks, with those selections taking place during the week commencing Monday 30 August 2027.

That means both captains will ultimately have six automatic qualifiers and six selections to complete their respective teams.

USA looking to end Europe's dominance

The changes come with the Americans desperate to regain the trophy after Europe secured back-to-back victories.

USA are incredibly also looking for their first away Ryder Cup win since The Belfry in 1993. 

Europe held their nerve to defeat the U.S. 15-13 at Bethpage Black in New York in 2025, despite a late American fightback in the Sunday singles.

Donald is now bidding to make history by becoming the first captain in the 100-year history of the contest to win three consecutive Ryder Cups on the bounce. 

The 2025 contest was also overshadowed by ugly scenes involving a minority of U.S. spectators, with several European players subjected to repeated verbal abuse. Rory McIlroy and his wife Erica were among those targeted during a particularly heated Saturday.

The 2027 Ryder Cup will take place from 17-19 September at Adare Manor in Ireland.

With both qualification systems now confirmed, players on either side of the Atlantic know exactly what is at stake as they begin the long road towards Adare Manor.
