LIV Golf star David Puig surged into a share of the lead after a superb 7-under-par 65 on a weather-disrupted Saturday at the BMW Australian PGA Championship, setting up a three-way tie at the top on 13-under par alongside home hope Anthony Quayle and Ricardo Gouveia heading into the final round at Royal Queensland.
Puig, who plays for Sergio Garcia's Fireballs GC on the LIV Golf League, has taken up full membership of the DP World Tour for the 2026 season after having played as an affiliate member in 2025.
The BMW Australian PGA marks the first event of the new 2026 DP World Tour season. It's also co-sanctioned with the PGA Tour of Australasia.
Puig fired a flawless round of 65, the best of the day, to vault to the top of the leaderboard, and set up a golden chance to win his first DP World Tour title.
"I just kind of played steady. You can't miss second shots here to the wrong side and the pins are really tucked in and then you've got to play to the fat part of the green," said Puig.
"And I think I did that pretty good and that made me have a bogey-free round, first of all, and not have much stress besides two or three holes in the middle."
Gouveia and Quayle are also both going in search of their first titles on the circuit, of which the latter is utilising the services of Tiger Woods' legendary former caddie Steve Williams both this week and at next week's Crown Australian Open, which will feature Rory McIlroy.
Quayle earned his DP World Tour card via the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia this year.
Former champion Min Woo Lee and halfway leader Kazuma Kobori sit just one shot off the pace at 12-under, keeping the final round wide open.
Play has been repeatedly halted throughout the week, with lightning suspending the opening round and more storms causing a two-hour delay early on Saturday.
With 18 holes left and nine players separated by just two shots, Sunday is shaping up to be a dramatic opener to the new 2026 DP World Tour season.
