Exclusive: Sergio Garcia confirms upcoming DP World Tour starts and return to Spanish Open

Sergio Garcia will return to DP World Tour action in early July as he attempts to throw his hat into the ring for a Ryder Cup pick, and he will also be headed to the Open de Espana for the first time since 2019.

Sergio Garcia has confirmed to GolfMagic he will definitely return to DP World Tour action at the BMW International Open and that he will also return to his home Spanish Open for the first time since 2019.

Garcia, 45, paid off his fines at the DP World Tour at the end of last season as a result of his ties to LIV Golf, and he agreed to this year return to the former European Tour circuit that he has won on 16 times.

The all-time Ryder Cup record points scorer (28.5) confirmed to GolfMagic via text he will be returning to DP World Tour action at the BMW International Open at Golfclub München Eichenriedin in Germany from 3-6 July.

That will mark his first start in a regular DP World Tour event since he withdrew from the BMW PGA at Wentworth in September 2022.

Garcia will then be looking to play his way into The 153rd Open at Royal Portrush via coming through the R&A's new LIV Golf pathway.

The leading player not already exempt in the top five of the 2025 LIV Golf Individual Standings following the final round of LIV Golf Dallas on 29 June will be awarded a place in The Open at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland from July 17-20.

As it stands, Garcia is in fourth place in the standings and that would be enough to see him head to The Open for the 26th time.

Garcia won his second career title on LIV Golf with a commanding three-shot victory in Hong Kong in March.

Should Garcia be pipped to the post for an Open spot via the LIV Golf standings, he will have the option of attempting to earn a place via Final Qualifying.

Garcia has not played in The Open since a T68 at the 150th Open at St Andrews in 2022.

The Spaniard played in The Masters in April as a result of his past champion (2017) status, and he then received a special invite to compete in the PGA Championship earlier this month.

Garcia missed the cut at The Masters and then went on to finish T67 at the PGA.

After golf's second major of the season at Quail Hollow Club, a frustrated Garcia admitted he was not happy with his game and that he would tell 2025 European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald to not pick him on current form

Garcia's Ryder Cup hopes were dealt another blow last week after he failed to come through a qualifier to compete in the U.S. Open at Oakmont from 12-15 June.

But Garcia has dusted himself down after a couple of disappointing months and is determined to give himself a fighting chance of earning one of Donald's six captain's picks when a decision is made this September.

Should Garcia go on to make the team, he will match English duo Sir Nick Faldo and Lee Westwood for a record 11 appearances on a European Ryder Cup team.

The 2025 Ryder Cup is being staged at Bethpage Black in New York, a venue where Garcia finished fourth at the 2002 U.S. Open.

Garcia also confirmed to GolfMagic he will be making another start on the DP World Tour this season at his home Open de Espana at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid from 9-12 October.

That tournament falls two weeks after the Ryder Cup from 26-28 September.

Garcia's appearance in the Open de Espana presented by Madrid will mark his first in the tournament since he finished T7 in 2019.

He won his sole Open de Espana in 2002.

"Yes definitely playing BMW International Open and will also play Spanish Open," Garcia confirmed to GolfMagic via text message.

Garcia also told GolfMagic he is still looking to add a couple more tournaments to his DP World Tour schedule in 2025.

The DP World Tour's flagship event of the season, the BMW PGA at Wentworth from 11-14 September, is potentially on Garcia's radar.

Another standout event on the schedule is the famous Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, the week after the Ryder Cup.

After the Open de Espana, the circuit heads to India where Rory McIlroy will play for the first time, before moving on to South Korea.

The DP World Tour then concludes its season with the DP World Tour Playoffs in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

All European Ryder Cup members must play in at least four qualifying events throughout the DP World Tour season.

These must be regular season events on the DP World Tour outside of the majors.

A DP World Tour spokesperson confirmed to GolfMagic: "The four events need to be fulfilled by the end of the season and the Ryder Cup itself is also a counting event."

The 2025 Ryder Cup qualification period for Team Europe ends at the Betfred British Masters at The Belfry on 24 August.

Six players will earn automatic spots in Donald's team that evening, and then the remaining six players on the team will learn their fate via picks in early September.

Garcia still has seven more LIV Golf League events from next week through to the end of August with which he must play, including a home title defence at LIV Golf Andalucia on the famous Valderrama from 11-13 July.

Donald recently admitted he has been watching a number of LIV Golf League events this season and is very much keeping a beady eye on the form of Garcia, Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton

Rahm and Hatton's appeals process over their fines on the DP World Tour has still yet to reach a conclusion.

It therefore remains to be seen whether the Legion XII teammates will remain eligible for Donald's team.

But as it stands, they will.

Garcia last played at the Ryder Cup in 2021.
