Sergio Garcia makes surprising Ryder Cup admission after PGA Championship
Sergio Garcia gives honest assessment of his game and what he would say to Luke Donald ahead of a potential return to the European Ryder Cup team this September.
Sergio Garcia admits he would tell Luke Donald to not pick him on the 2025 European Ryder Cup team based on his current performances.
Garcia, 45, gave an honest assessment of his game when speaking to the media after finishing down the board on 7-over par at the PGA Championship.
The 2017 Masters champion received one of a number of invites into golf's second major of the season.
It was a rollercoaster week for Garcia with rounds of 75, 68, 79 and 69.
Garcia knows as a result of him being a LIV Golf player and not receiving Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points on the breakaway league that he needs to take advantage of his major starts.
But he hasn't.
Garcia missed the cut at The Masters (he was eligible as a past champion) and he finished T67 at the PGA Championship this week.
Thankfully, Garcia is now eligible to return to the DP World Tour having paid off his fines as a result of joining LIV Golf in 2022.
The Spaniard is expected to return to the former European Tour circuit this summer in a bid to rack up some much-needed Ryder Cup points.
In all likelihood though, and Garcia knows it, he will be relying on one of six captain's picks on Donald's team if he is to return to the Ryder Cup fold at Bethpage Black in New York this September.
But if Donald's picks were to be named right now, Garcia would tell the Englishman to bypass him.
"It is there if I play better," admitted Garcia when the subject of Ryder Cup arose with a pool of reporters after the final round of the PGA Championship on Sunday.
"Obviously the way I'm playing, even if Luke offered me a pick right now, I would tell him no.
"So obviously I need to get better. I need to get more where I was just before the Masters. You know, just show myself and show everyone that my game is solid, and it can help the Team Europe. It's as simple as that.
"The good thing is that there's still, you know, two or three months until the team is finalized. So you know, I'll have time to gain some confidence and improve a little bit on my game."
Garcia, who won his second career title on LIV Golf earlier this season in Korea, will be looking to pick up at least one more victory before September.
He will also be looking to put on a good showing when he returns to the DP World Tour this summer.
GolfMagic understands Garcia is next expected to peg it up on the DP World Tour at the BMW International Open in Munich, Germany, from 3-6 July.
That is two weeks before The Open at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland.
As it stands, Garcia is ineligible to compete in the next two majors of the season at the U.S. Open and The Open.
Garcia will be able to play in both tournaments should he decide to compete and ultimately come through their qualifiers.
The Spaniard certainly knows he has experience on his side when it comes to the Ryder Cup.
He has played on 10 European Ryder Cup teams.
Garcia is also the all-time Ryder Cup record points scorer with 28.5 points.
