Bubba Watson makes surprise announcement amid growing LIV Golf uncertainty

Two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson has made the unexpected announcement that he will tee it up at the Danish Golf Championship on the DP World Tour from 13-16 August.

The 47-year-old American, who captains RangeGoats GC on the LIV Golf League, has accepted an invitation to compete at Great Northern in Kerteminde, marking his first competitive appearance in Denmark. 

Watson's decision to travel to Europe comes as a surprise given the championship falls between LIV Golf Bedminster (6-9 August) and LIV Golf Indianapolis (20-23 August). 

The left hander will be joined in the field by fellow LIV Golf star Lucas Herbert, who is currently playing some of the golf of his life. 

The 30-year-old Australian followed a tied sixth at The Open three weeks ago with a dominant six-shot victory at LIV Golf UK in his last start.

Herbert, who represents Cameron Smith's Ripper GC on LIV Golf, has recorded two wins and seven top-10 finishes around the world this season. 

While Herbert has found plenty of form this season, the same cannot be said for Watson, albeit he is 17 years older. 

The two-time major champion has managed just one top-10 finish in 11 starts this season — a solo ninth at LIV Golf Andalucia in June — leaving him 38th in the individual standings and in LIV Golf's Open Zone as the battle to avoid relegation intensifies.

The American famously won the Masters in 2012 and 2014, with Ted Scott on the bag for both victories. Scott now caddies for World No.1 Scottie Scheffler, while Kyle Peters carries Watson's bag.

Watson's surprise decision to tee it up in Denmark comes amid uncertainty over LIV Golf's schedule beyond Indianapolis. 

Conflicting reports remain over whether the season-ending Team Championship in Michigan, scheduled for the final week of August, will even go ahead.  

Flushing It also claims multiple insiders expect a bankruptcy filing this month, with players offered equity as the league seeks new funding after PIF support ends this season.

There is some positive news for the league though, at least according to New York Post.

The publication has this week reported LIV Golf is closing in on a $250 million investment that could help secure the league's future beyond this season.

The Danish Golf Championship will be staged at Great Northern in Kerteminde for the first time from 13-16 August. 

Formerly known as the Made in Denmark, the tournament has been part of the DP World Tour schedule since its inaugural edition in 2014.

England's Marco Penge is not returning for his title defence, but the home fans will be pleased to see their very own Rasmus Hojgaard listed in the field.
