Shane Lowry stunned the fans at Wentworth as he pulled off one of the most outrageous shots ever seen at the BMW PGA Championship.

Lowry, playing alongside close friend and Ryder Cup team-mate Rory McIlroy for the third day running, produced a genuine moment of magic on the 9th hole of his third round.

The Irishman had dropped a 30-foot putt for birdie on the 8th to move to 3-under for the round and 6-under par overall, but he put himself into an awkward spot when he pushed his drive too far right at the 9th.

Lowry had 180 yards to the pin, but his direct path was blocked out by the trees overhanging the right side of the fairway, so it was time for him to channel his "inner Seve".

Known for his ability to shape his shots both ways, Lowry's creative mind picked out a line through a narrow tunnel in between the tree trunks.

The shot needed a low trajectory and a serious amount of right-to-left ball flight, and any minor misjudgement could have had serious consequences.

But he committed fully to the strike and made perfect contact, drilling his ball through the gap towards the green.

And the contact was too pure, in fact, as he was unlucky that his ball did not hold the putting surface and wandered over the back.

But he was able to save par with a deft chip to tap-in range, keeping him in sight of the leaders on moving day.

The DP World Tour's social media team described it as "A gap only pros will go for", while Fore Play labelled the shot as "FILTHY"!

"What a golf shot, goodness me," said an amazed Sam Torrance in the commentary booth, with on-course commentator, Jamie Spence, adding: "I didn't see that!"

One social media member summed up the moment nicely, posting: "Needle threaded!"
