Patrick Reed WDs from BMW PGA Championship after horror show at Wentworth

Patrick Reed will play no further part in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth. 

The American withdrew from the DP World Tour's flagship event during the second round after appearing to be struggling with a wrist injury. 

Former Masters champion Reed, 36, looked in visible discomfort as he was carted off the West Course after his tee shot on the 10th hole flew into a group of spectators near the green.

Reed began the Rolex Series event in solid fashion, signing for an opening 4-under 68. 

He was looking to make a charge up the leaderboard on Friday but endured an almighty collapse. 

By the time of his withdrawal, Reed had slipped to 5-over for the championship after playing his opening nine holes in an astonishing 9-over.

He began the day in the worst possible fashion, making a triple-bogey right out of the blocks. 

His tee shot shot sailed straight left, 231 yards into some bushes. 

After taking a drop, Reed advanced his golf ball towards the front of the green. 

Having chipped onto the putting surface, Reed missed an eight-foot putt for a double. 

He dropped another stroke at the 2nd after failing to save par from the bunker. 

Reed did extremely well to avoid dropping a shot at the 3rd after going left again with his tee shot. 

The former LIV Golf recruit managed to find a narrow gap through the trees and got up and down from 27 yards. 

Reed's tee shot sailed out of bound at the 4th and that led to a double-bogey. 

He found the sand with his tee shot at the 5th and he dropped another stroke. 

He steadied the ship with pars at the 6th and 7th but found the water at the short par-4 8th with his second shot. 

It led to his second double-bogey of the day. 

Reed walked off the 9th with a par but called it a day after hitting his tee shot at the 10th.

The result is hugely disappointing for Reed, who leads the Race to Dubai. 

Reed quit LIV Golf at the beginning of the year and is playing on the DP World Tour this season in a bid to improve his status when he returns to the PGA Tour. 

He has already had his membership reinstated but wasn't eligible for the returning member programme, which Brooks Koepka took advantage of.

A mouth-watering battle with his former Ryder Cup rival, Rory McIlroy, is brewing. 

At the beginning of the week, Reed spoke of his desire to make McIlroy "wait a year" for his eighth order of merit title. 

"Any time I get to go play against Rory, it's always fun because that means you get to play some amazing golf," said Reed. 

"With his record and just kind of his resumé that he has, he's a champion. 

"He's been a champion a ton of times and he's one of those guys that if you go up against the best, you're going to have to take him and Scottie [Scheffler] on. 

"To have the opportunity to take him on throughout the whole rest of the year is going to be fun and looking forward to it."
