Tiger Woods makes big announcement as another ambitious golf project emerges

The 15-time major champion is expanding his golf course design portfolio with another high-profile development as he continues to shape the sport's future.

Tiger Woods might not be playing much competitive golf at the moment, but he's certainly not stepping away from the sport.

Far from it. The 15-time major champion has just announced another ambitious golf course project, adding to an increasingly impressive design portfolio.

And this latest development is taking him to a rather special destination.

Woods has confirmed that his TGR Design team is partnering with The Armchair Collective to create an exclusive new 18-hole private golf course in Brookville, on Long Island's famous Gold Coast.

This isn't just another design commission, either.

Long Island is home to some of America's most iconic golfing venues, including Shinnecock Hills, Bethpage Black and National Golf Links of America.

Now, Woods, 50, is preparing to add his own creation to a region where golf's biggest names have been making history for generations.

Taking to Instagram on Monday 2 November, Woods shared his excitement about the project.

"I'm excited to announce that @tgr.design and I are partnering with The Armchair Collective to design a new 18-hole private golf course in the Village of Brookville in Long Island's Gold Coast," he wrote.

"Long Island is home to some of the most celebrated golf courses in the country, and we're looking forward to contributing to the region's rich golf history."

The development will breathe new life into the former Tam O'Shanter Country Club, which closed in 2021.

And the plans extend well beyond an 18-hole layout.

The proposed development will include a huge 20,000-square-foot putting green, a dedicated golf performance centre, a new clubhouse and accommodation cottages for members.

Site preparation is already underway, with construction scheduled to begin in 2027. The club's name and initial design renderings are also expected to be revealed early next year.

It's another significant addition to Woods' growing portfolio of golf course design projects.

Through TGR Design, the American has already been involved in some ambitious developments, including Bluejack National in Texas, Payne's Valley in Missouri and El Cardonal in Mexico.

The latter became a particularly important milestone in 2023 when it hosted the World Wide Technology Championship, making it the first Woods-designed course to stage a PGA Tour event.

But Long Island presents a fascinating new challenge.

This is a region where golf course architecture is taken extremely seriously, and Woods will be looking to create something that stands out among some seriously prestigious neighbours.

And it's not the only ambitious design project reportedly on his radar.

Just a fortnight ago, reports emerged suggesting Woods and his TGR Design team had been selected to design a proposed £30 million championship links course at Bellarena on Northern Ireland's north coast.

The development, led by Galgorm Collection, would be particularly significant for the region, potentially delivering its first new links layout of this kind in a century.

Although the company has yet to officially confirm Woods' involvement, a Causeway Coast and Glens councillor reportedly told the Derry Journal that the golfing great had been signed up for the project.

If both developments come to fruition, Woods could be responsible for two major new golfing destinations on opposite sides of the Atlantic.

And while his work in course design continues to gather momentum, the big question surrounding his playing career hasn't gone away.

Woods hasn't competed since missing the cut at the 2024 Open Championship, with his recovery and personal circumstances keeping him away from regular tournament golf.

However, there are growing hopes that we could see more of him in action in 2027.

Former TGL teammate Kevin Kisner has suggested Woods is keen to feature more regularly during the league's third season, while speculation continues over a possible appearance at the Hero World Challenge and a return to the Masters.

There is also the possibility of another appearance alongside teenage son Charlie at the PNC Championship.

Nothing has been confirmed regarding his competitive schedule, but one thing is becoming increasingly clear.

Woods remains heavily invested in golf's future.

For decades, his legacy has been built on winning majors, breaking records and producing moments that seemed almost impossible.

Now, he's turning his attention to something rather different.

Instead of trying to conquer golf's greatest courses, Tiger Woods is increasingly focused on creating the places where the next generation will make their own history.
