Shane Lowry comes under fire after shocking comment during Irish Open

Shane Lowry has come under fire on social media after appearing to make a shocking comment during the third round of the Irish Open at Trump Doonbeg.

The Irishman was heard saying “they deserve to get hit” after his errant tee shot headed down the left side of the par-4 18th.

The comment has sparked a significant reaction among golf fans on social media, with many questioning why the 39-year-old would make such a remark about spectators who appeared to be standing behind the ropes alongside course marshals.

Lowry's baffling comment came at the end of what was otherwise another outstanding round of golf from the home favourite.

The 2019 Open champion managed to save par after his wayward drive and went on to card a superb 65, strengthening his position at the top of the Irish Open leaderboard.

He now heads into the final round at 16-under par, with a commanding advantage as he looks to claim victory on home soil.

Thankfully, despite what Lowry said, nobody was hurt after his tee shot. 

He also appeared to get a good break.

We won't repeat some of the more extreme comments directed towards Lowry on social media, but it is fair to say the remark has not gone down well with a large section of the golf community.

Some fans have questioned the language used by Lowry given a group of spectators appeared to be minding their own business behind the ropes where they should have been. 

The incident has certainly provided an unwanted talking point heading into Sunday's final round where he leads by four shots. 

Lowry chasing Irish Open glory

Away from the controversy, Lowry has been in sensational form throughout the week.

Much of his advantage was built on Friday when he produced a remarkable course-record 62, before following it with another impressive 65 on Saturday.

That leaves Lowry at 16-under par and firmly in control of the tournament.

However, he still has work to do, with Jacob Skov Olesen four shots behind him in second on 12-under par. 

LIV duo Joaquin Niemann and Tom McKibbin find themselves in the top five, but are likely just playing for places.

Lowry will now have to put the social media reaction to one side and concentrate on finishing the job.

The Irishman is looking to win his second Irish Open, having won his first as a fresh-faced and well-behaved amateur back in 2009. 

Lowry is also looking to chalk up his seventh career win on the DP World Tour and his first on the circuit in exactly four years.
