Tour winner confirms his season is over after undergoing surgery: "It will be a long few months without golf"

European Ryder Cup vice captain has confirmed his season is over after undergoing surgery on his thumb.

European Ryder Cup vice captain Edoardo Molinari has confirmed his season on the DP World Tour is over after undergoing surgery on his thumb. 

Molinari has only made 10 appearances on the DP World Tour this season and his best finish saw him finish solo ninth at the Hero Indian Open. 

The 44-year-old Italian kept onto his card last season with a commanding performance at Q-School

He withdrew from last week's Nexo Championship, held at Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeenshire, 16 holes into the first round. 

At the time, he was 14-over par and his card featured seven bogeys, two double bogeys and one triple. 

Edoardo, the older brother to 2019 Open winner Francesco, has now confirmed that he's been struggling with a thumb injury.

He wrote on Instagram: "Really tough day today as I am about to go for surgery on my left thumb.

"Unfortunately it's been painful for months now and I tried everything possible to make it better without much success.

"It will be a long few months without golf, my 2025 season is over and I just hope that one day I'll be able to practice and play without any pain!"

He added: "I will fight through this like I've always done with everything I do and hopefully I'll be back to playing good golf one day in front of them."

Despite not being able to more tournament golf in 2025, Edoardo still the Ryder Cup matches over 26-28 September to look forward to. 

European skipper Luke Donald asked the golfer to return the leadership team as one of his vice captains. 

Thomas Bjorn, Jose Maria Olazabal and the aforementioned Francesco will serve as vice captains at Bethpage Black. 

Donald still has one vacancy to fill. 

Edoardo has been quietly viewed as one of Europe's most influential figures behind the scenes. 

He has been a reputation as one of golf's leading statisticians, running his own company that supplies advances analytics to players on the on the PGA Tour and DP World Tour.

Donald brought Edoardo in to turn raw data into winning pairings and strategies.

"Now there is only one more golf-related thing I want to achieve in 2025," added Edoardo. 

"And that will hopefully happen in New York again at the end of September...luckily I won't have to hit any shots!"
