Did Bryson DeChambeau take a subtle shot at Rory McIlroy with his latest social media post?
The Rory McIlroy, Bryson DeChambeau rivalry is bubbling up nicely ahead of The Masters.
Bryson DeChambeau has golf fans talking after a seemingly innocent social media post… but is there more to it?
On Friday night, DeChambeau shared two photos on X (formerly Twitter) from a post-LIV Golf South Africa safari, featuring him with an elephant and a giraffe.
His caption? Simply: “Highly recommend going to South Africa.”
The golf world immediately wondered: was this a subtle dig at Rory McIlroy?
The context makes it juicy. Just weeks earlier, McIlroy had commented on Jon Rahm traveling to South Africa for LIV Golf, hinting it wasn’t exactly a trip Rahm would have chosen.
While McIlroy’s remarks weren’t directly about the country, South African players — including Dean Burmester — weren’t thrilled.
Burmester shut down any comparisons between his local support and McIlroy’s in Northern Ireland, saying: “I think bringing up Rory here after his comments of South Africa is not a great idea.”
So DeChambeau posting a glowing review of South Africa right after?
Golf fans jumped on it.
One wrote: “This is definitely a passive aggressive shot at Rory.”
Another added: “100% a Rory dig, love it!”
DeChambeau, of course, had plenty to celebrate.
He defeated Rahm in a playoff to win the inaugural LIV Golf South Africa title at The Club at Steyn City — marking back-to-back wins and a fifth career title on the circuit.
His Crushers GC team also took the team event, making it a double triumph.
Rahm, meanwhile, praised the enthusiastic crowds, calling it one of his best weeks on the league yet.
More than 100,000 fans attended, making it South Africa’s biggest-ever golf tournament, and LIV Golf has already confirmed the event will return in April 2027.
Adding fuel to the fire, DeChambeau’s post came just hours after a teaser from McIlroy’s new Amazon Prime documentary went viral.
In it, McIlroy recalls a tense moment with DeChambeau during the 2025 Masters, arguing over whose putt should go first on the 9th green.
McIlroy stood his ground, sank the putt, and went on to complete the career grand slam with a playoff win over Justin Rose.
Prior to the 2025 Masters, McIlroy and DeChambeau had also battled out the 2024 US Open at Pinehurst.
DeChambeau narrowly got the better of McIlroy that week after the Northern Irishman missed two short putts on the closing holes, and the American made a stunning up and down from the front greenside bunker on the 72nd hole.
Intentional South African dig or not, fans are speculating ahead of the 2026 Masters, where DeChambeau and McIlroy are once again likely to clash for the green jacket.
One thing’s for certain: the rivalry is heating up, and we're all here for it.
