Joaquin Niemann delivers intriguing LIV Golf response after BMW PGA Championship

Joaquin Niemann provided an intriguing update on his LIV Golf future after speaking to Golf Digest at the BMW PGA Championship, with the Chilean revealing where things currently stand ahead of the league's proposed 2027 relaunch.

The 27-year-old was competing at Wentworth as the DP World Tour's flagship event took place in Surrey, eventually finishing tied for 21st on 11-under par and six shots behind eventual winner J.J. Spaun. 

Niemann was asked by Golf Digest about a player call held by LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neil on Friday, with the Torque GC captain confirming that he had not taken part.

"No, I wasn't," Niemann said.

O'Neil has been holding regular calls with LIV players, but Niemann explained that he has been concentrating on his tournament schedule rather than getting involved in discussions away from the course.

"He does the calls every week and I've been playing tournaments the last few weeks, so I just don't want to get my head in something different," he continued.

"So probably go back and get in touch."

Niemann was then asked whether he had already committed to playing LIV Golf in 2027.

His response was short and sweet. 

"No, nothing yet."

Niemann's comments about a future career on LIV Golf were similar to those of Jon Rahm, who remained tight-lipped when speaking to reporters before going on to miss the cut at Wentworth. 

Niemann's latest comments to Golf Digest at an important time for both Niemann and LIV Golf.

Since departing the PGA Tour in 2022, the Chilean has established himself as one of the most successful players on the breakaway league, winning a record nine times across five LIV Golf seasons after previously recording two PGA Tour titles.

As captain of Torque GC, Niemann is also one of the league's most prominent figures, making his position particularly significant as LIV attempts to finalise its plans for 2027.

The league recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in New Jersey and is undergoing a major restructuring ahead of its next phase.

Reports have suggested LIV could operate a 10-event schedule in 2027, with five tournaments carrying $5.5 million purses and another five offering $9.5 million.

BC Partners has also emerged as a new investor, reportedly set to inject $300 million into the next version of the league.

Niemann, however, was unwilling to speculate about what is happening behind the scenes at this very moment in time. 

"I have no idea," he told Golf Digest. 

"I mean, I wish to say something, but I have no idea."

Niemann's immediate future is much clearer. 

He will take an extended break from competitive golf before returning at the Australian Open at Melbourne's Kingston Heath from 3-6 December. 

The Chilean also currently finds himself without a full DP World Tour card after failing to meet the circuit's minimum number of appearances last season. 

He could, however, regain a category for 2027 by winning a tournament or going through Q-School. 

For now, Niemann intends to use his time away from competition to reset before the new season.

One where he will hope to win a major title for the first time in his career. 

"I'm going to have some time off in Chile, work a little bit on my game, spend some time with the family and get ready for the new season," concluded Niemann, who has just two top-10 finishes in 29 major appearances. 

For LIV Golf's record winner, the next few weeks are likely to prove significant as to where he will be playing the majority of his golf in 2027.
