Former Open champion Cameron Smith says his disastrous 2025 campaign is 'just a setback'.

The Aussie was part of the first wave of players to be recruited by LIV Golf three years ago.

It is understood Smith earned more than $125m as part of a multi-year agreement with the PIF-backed breakaway.

And while he has picked up three individual victories, Smith has struggled to find form in the majors.

The former champion golfer of the year missed cuts at The Masters, PGA Championship, U.S. Open and The Open this year.

Smith told a group of reporters, including bunkered, in a roundtable that his form has been disappointing.

But he insists he is working hard to try and turn his form around and it's only a matter of time before he is back at the top of his game.

"I've been working hard and not getting results which isn't a good feeling and kind of sucks to be honest," Smith said.

"But we've got a few more events here before. We're in Chicago and [Indianapolis] before we get to Detroit.

"The goal is to finish it off strong and keep working it hard for those three events and then in the off season to have a better one next year.

"You're constantly trying to figure stuff out whether you're playing great or bad."

Smith's slump is certainly confusing and one that critics of the breakaway will have a field day with.

One of his teammates, Marc Leishman, told The Australian that Smith has had 'a lot going on this year' off the course.

He's likely referring to the fact Smith and his wife Shanel Naoum are expecting their first child.

"It's been an adjustment for him," Leishman said.

Former World No.1 Adam Scott also told the publication that these setbacks are common in professional golf.

"This is kind of the first time he has not performed better and better," Scott said.

"If I look at my 25 years, there's probably been three significant points where I've had these little slumps.

"I think that's to be expected in golf. It's just very hard to be putting it all together for 20 plus years."

Smith will have to wait 260 days until he gets another crack at a major.

"I can't quite put my finger on it," he said. "I feel like my technical stuff with my swing is as good as it's ever been and I'm not getting the results from it.

"It's been difficult in the sense that it feels really good but I can't go out there and play my best golf.

"I'm working through it mentally. I feel like I've lost a little bit of confidence in my game but I'm slowly getting that back and that's through hard work."
