A composed six-under 66 gave Si-Woo Kim a one-shot lead over world number one Scottie Scheffler and teenager Blades Brown after the third round of The American Express.

The South Korean's seven birdies and one bogey put him on 22-under par after 54 holes.

Brown, who very nearly broke 60 yesterday, birdied his final three holes to card a 68.

Kim's biggest challenge, though, is likely to come from the top-ranked Scheffler who is chasing his 20th PGA Tour title.

Scheffler did not have his best stuff on Saturday, dropping shots at the third and 13th holes but still managed a four-under 68.

The 30-year-old, who won six titles last year - including two majors - is yet to win The American Express.

Victory on Sunday would see him join an exclusive club and hand him lifetime membership on the PGA Tour.

Eric Cole and 2023 U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark are by no means out of contention on 20-under par.

Tom Hoge, Matt McCarty and Andrew Putnam are a stroke further adrift.

The American Express sees the field play three different courses at La Quinta before a 54-hole cut.

Notable players to miss the cut included Tony Finau, Matt Wallace, Justin Rose, Brian Harman and the defending champion Sepp Straka.

Ludvig Aberg was nine-under par after 36 holes but withdrew ahead of the third round with illness. Nick Dunlap and Luke Clanton also withdrew.

The champion will walk away with a cheque for £1,236,000 ($1.656m).
