Former Masters champion Adam Scott made a strong start to the inaugural Baycurrent Classic in Japan.
The PGA Tour veteran is only one stroke adrift of the lead after 18 holes at Yokohama Country Club.
Scott made four birdies over his first nine holes, dropping only one stroke, before making 12 consecutive pars.
Max Greyserman, Bud Cauley and Brian Campbell sit atop the leaderboard.
Scott said: "I got off to like a great start, hit a few shots in close the first few holes and then just started grinding from there.
"I did hit a few other good shots but I actually missed those putts.
"I'm not going to say it should be a couple better, I'm pretty happy with that score in this condition.
Elsewhere, home favourite Hideki Matsuyama struggled on day one, carding a 1-over par 72.
Collin Morikawa and Xander Schauffele both shot level par.
The tournament, held at the 7,315-yard par-71 course, is the PGA Tour's only event in Japan this year, having replaced the Zozo Championship.
It is part of the FedEx Cup Fall series, which provides players opportunities to improve their ranking, retain their cards and qualify for next season's signature events.
