Scotland's Robert MacIntyre takes a commanding five-shot lead into the weekend at the BMW Championship at Caves Valley GC in Maryland.

MacIntyre, 29, fired a stunning 6-under 64 to move to 14-under thru 36 holes in the PGA Tour's second FedEx Playoffs event.

The two-time PGA Tour winner holds a five-shot lead over FedEx Cup leader and World No.1 Scottie Scheffler, who fared one shot worse with a solid 65.

MacIntyre admits he has played some of the best golf of his PGA Tour career the last two days - testament to ranking first in strokes-gained approach the green (6.80), strokes-gained putting (6.75) and strokes-gained total (14.16)

"Yeah, I've played beautifully the last two days," said MacIntyre.

"Yesterday the putter was on fire. Today I felt like my iron play was exceptional.

"But I've been putting in the work the last couple of weeks to make it -- to improve on what I was doing since the Wyndham.

"Obviously coming from links golf back out to throwing darts is a bit different technique-wise, turf-wise, so it took a little bit of readjusting, but I've got the hang of it."

As it stands should MacIntyre go on to complete his PGA Tour hat-trick, he would vault from 20th to third in the FedEx Cup standings.

He would also go on to lock up a second consecutive appearance on the European Ryder Cup team, something that looks assured now.

Scheffler very much remains in the hunt for a fifth PGA Tour title of the season as he looks on in solo second.

The flawless 65 for Scheffler marked his 58th bogey-free round over the course of the last four years on the PGA Tour, which is 17 more than the next best player.

Sweden's Ludvig Aberg matched MacIntyre's round of 64 to move to 8-under par in solo third.

Japan's Hideki Matsuyama is in fourth on 7-under after also shooting a 64.

Tommy Fleetwood dropped back with a 69 to round out the top five with Michael Kim (66) and Maverick McNealy (64) on 6-under par.

Harry Hall carded a 67 to move to 5-under par inside the top 10.

Hall stunned golf fans after the round when revealing he's had no recent interaction with European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald, despite many people considering he's in with a great chance of a captain's pick on current form.

Rory McIlroy recovered from a double-bogey five on the 3rd to card a round of 66 to move up to 4-under par, which is just outside the top 10.
