Chris Kirk, Philip Knowles and Andrew Putnam share the lead at the halfway stage of the Rocket Classic

Knowles fired an eight-under 64 on Friday afternoon at Detroit Golf Club to make a charge up the leaderboard.

The 28-year-old even chipped in for eagle at the fourth, seventh and 17th holes.

Kirk hit nine birdies and two bogeys on his way to a 65 whilst Putnam managed four birdies and an eagle in his 66.

Jake Knapp made the biggest move of the day with a scintillating 11-under 61 that included nine birdies and an eagle.

"I'm definitely not afraid of shooting a low number," Knapp said. "I feel like when I start making birdies, I want to make more.

"I was even kind of thinking about 59 when I stuck it close on my third to last for eagle and figured I could maybe eagle that and birdie the last two."

England's Harry Hall and former Masters champ Hideki Matsuyama are also inside the top-10.

Matsuyama has a fill-in caddie this week as his regular bagman Shota Hayafuji had visa issues.

Wyndham Clark, Max Homa, Rickie Fowler and Tom Kim were among the notables that missed the cut.

Knowles said: "It's not been my best year thus far by any stretch of the imagination, but golf is funny.

"When you're playing bad, you never feel like you're going to play good again, and when you have days like today, you just don't understand how you could ever shoot a bad round of golf.

"So it was super rewarding, I got pretty lucky a couple times, I hit quality shots that ended up going in the hole, but I can't imagine chipping in three times for eagle ever again in my life."
