America's Andrew Novak grabbed the 36-hole lead at the RSM Classic

The 30-year-old hit nine birdies and two bogeys in a second-round 65 to reach 16-under par.

He leads compatriots Michael Thorbjornsen and Patrick Rodgers by one stroke.

The RSM Classic is the final event of the PGA Tour's season and there is plenty on the line.

Several notable professional are fighting to keep hold of their cards.

Only the top 100 players at the conclusion of the tournament will be fully exempt on the Tour next season.

Players ranked 101-125 will have conditional status only.

Novak needn't worry about keeping his job next year given he secured a two-year exemption with his first PGA Tour title at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

"I thought I drove it well again today, gave myself a lot of opportunities with some shorter irons in and wedges in and really took advantage," Novak said.

"There was a lot of close wedge shots where they weren't necessarily gimmes but very, very good opportunities with the putter and kind of got in a rhythm with that and maximised some opportunities in the middle of the round"

Novak is playing on his home course this week. He recently became a father and told reporters that the familiar surroundings is definitely contributing to good golf.

He also understands several players will be stressed.

"I'm just here getting out of the house and happy to be here and other guys are fighting for their job," he added.

"That is a huge advantage for me this week. I've got a little bit less riding on it. I definitely want to win.

"It's a local tournament so there is extra motivation for me to play well here for that. But some guys have their entire years riding on this week."

Big names miss the cut

Joel Dahmen was among the notables who needed a big week to keep his card.

But Dahmen carded rounds of 69 and 68 to miss the cut by two.

He will not be fully exempt next season.

Dahmen was relaxed about the situation before the tournament began, explaining that he recently had a second child and there's "no downside" to the situation.

Thorbjorn Olesen also missed the cut but, at the time of writing, is holding onto his card in the 97th spot.

England's Matt Wallace, who made the cut, is currently the projected bubble boy.

Wallace told reporters he regretted playing such a heavy schedule in Europe now his PGA Tour playing rights are on the line.

Canada's Adam Hadwin (pictured) is also facing the prospect of not having fully exempt status for the first time in 11 years.

Hadwin made the cut but needs to finish no lower than second.

"I have accepted the situation," Hadwin said. "I don't think I'm at peace with it. I don't want to be in this situation, it sucks.

"For the first time in 11 years on Tour I don't have a place to necessarily call home next year.

"I'm grinding through it, figuring out a way to work through it.

"Like I said, I've accepted it, but I've got two more days to try and go low. Talk to me again then."
