Six-time PGA Tour winner withdraws on eve of Genesis Scottish Open

Tony Finau pulls out of this week's Scottish Open without explanation as his difficult season takes another disappointing turn.

Six-time PGA Tour winner Tony Finau has withdrawn from this week's Genesis Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club in North Berwick.

No official reason has been given for the American's withdrawal ahead of the $9 million Rolex Series event, with Australian Karl Vilips taking his place in the field.

Finau arrives on the back of a tied-58th finish at the John Deere Classic, where his performance was better than the result suggested.

The 36-year-old ranked first in the field for total feet of putts made and third in Strokes Gained: Off the Tee, but has nevertheless opted against making the trip to Scotland.

Finau's withdrawal continues a frustrating season for the former world number nine, who has unthinkably slipped to 118th in the Official World Golf Ranking after struggling to rediscover the form that made him a regular on both the United States Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup teams.

Finau has recorded just one top-10 finish in 18 PGA Tour starts during the 2026 season, a tied-sixth finish at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson in May.

His most recent victory came at the Mexico Open in 2023, more than three years ago.

Finau's decline has also seen him miss all four major championships this season for the first time in his career.

He failed to qualify for next week's Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, having also missed out on places in the Masters, PGA Championship and U.S. Open fields.

Finau's withdrawal from the Genesis Scottish Open is particularly surprising given this week's tournament is the final event in The Open Qualifying Series.

The leading three players not already exempt who make the cut at The Renaissance Club will secure the last available places in next week's major.

A strong performance would therefore have given Finau one final opportunity to book his place at Royal Birkdale, but he has instead elected not to compete

Vilips, who represents Tiger Woods' Sun Day Red apparel brand, has been promoted into the field following Finau's withdrawal.

Despite losing Finau, the Genesis Scottish Open once again boasts one of the strongest fields of the season.

World number one Scottie Scheffler and world number two Rory McIlroy headline the star-studded line-up, alongside major champions Wyndham Clark, Matt Fitzpatrick, Shane Lowry, Justin Rose, Aaron Rai, Xander Schauffele, J.J. Spaun and Justin Thomas.

Tommy Fleetwood and Ludvig Åberg are also in action, while LIV Golf stars Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton add further quality to the field.

Brooks Koepka will also tee it up after receiving a sponsor's invitation.

Defending champion Chris Gotterup returns to North Berwick looking to retain the title he won 12 months ago after edging McIlroy in a dramatic finish.

The American arrives in Scotland in excellent form following his victory at last week's John Deere Classic.

Gotterup collected $1.575 million for his triumph last year, and the winner of this week's Genesis Scottish Open is expected to receive the same first prize from the tournament's $9 million purse.

The Genesis Scottish Open is a co-sanctioned tournament by the DP World Tour and PGA Tour.
