Rory McIlroy will be making his eighth appearance in the Ryder Cup when he spearheads the European team at Bethpage Black.

McIlroy's passion for the Ryder Cup is undoubted, although he does get the odd reminder that he described the contest as an "exhibition" ahead of his debut in 2010.

For a player of his talents, his record his disappointing. Before the 2023 showdown in Rome, he had lost as many matches as he had won.

But he then enjoyed the best Ryder Cup of his career, winning four of his five matches with his only defeat coming against Patrick Cantlay and Wyndham Clark in the infamous hat-waving incident on the final green late on day two.

McIlroy played his first six fourballs and foursomes matches with compatriot Graeme McDowell, while he also formed strong partnerships with Ian Poulter and Sergio Garcia.

McIlroy was Poulter's partner when "The Postman" delivered one of the most memorable performances in the final fourballs match at Medinah in 2012, clinching a point that gave Europe a huge boost heading into the singles.

But his most successful pairing was with rookie Thomas Pieters at Hazeltine in 2016, when some inspired and aggressive golf earned them three convincing wins from their three matches together.

McIlroy lost three matches in a row at Whistling Straits in 2021 and sat out a session for the first time since his debut.

But he roared back to beat Xander Schauffele in his singles before giving an emotionally-charged interview as he explained how he felt he had let the side down over the first two days.

If anyone still doubted McIlroy's commitment to Team Europe at the time, they would have been swayed by that interview, and then his performance in Rome.

What is Rory McIlroy's Ryder Cup record?

McIlroy's overall Ryder Cup record is 16–13–4.
