Rory McIlroy dropped a loud F-bomb as his frustrations boiled over during the final round of the U.S. Open

McIlroy, 37, entered round four of the third men's major of the year at Shinnecock Hills with little hope of winning the gold medal.

He started the final round on three-over par, trailing leader Wyndham Clark by 10 shots.

The Masters champion undoubtedly wanted to leave on a positive note, though, by making a move up the leaderboard.

But he had a poor start and his frustrations boiled over, prompting the Northern Irishman drop a loud F-bomb and tell himself to simply go home.

What happened?

McIlroy hit driver on the opening hole and, despite hitting his TP5x greenside, failed to get up and down for birdie.

He hit his tee shot to the edge of the green at the 255-yard par-three second and dropped his first shot of the day by missing a par putt from eight feet.

At the next hole, McIlroy split the fairway with an 383-yard tee shot but fatted his approach into the right trap.

McIlroy sighed. Hot mics picked up McIlroy saying: "Ah, just go home, Rory!"

His day didn't get any better.

More dropped shots at the fifth and ninth saw him turn in 39 at seven-over for the championship.

He tumbled down the leaderboard into a tie for 40th.

McIlroy opened the 126th edition of the U.S. Open with a one-under 69

He took a step backwards in round two before briefly making his way back into contention on Saturday, turning in 33.

But the six-time major champion played himself out of the U.S. Open by making five bogeys on the second nine.

He will have one more opportunity to add to his major haul in 2026.

Next month, McIlroy will head to Royal Birkdale for The Open.

McIlroy was expected to tee it up at the Travelers Championship next week and the Genesis Scottish Open next month as part of his preparation.

But he has decided to skip another signature event on the PGA Tour.
