US Open 2025: The surprising names in danger of missing the cut at Oakmont
The US Open continues on Friday but already there are several high-profile players that have an uphill battle to make the 36-hole cut at Oakmont.
The US Open could be without some big names at the weekend.
Masters champion Rory McIlroy was among the high-profile players who struggled on day one at Oakmont.
McIlroy, 36, played the back nine first and appeared comfortable early doors by making the turn in 2-under par.
He drove the ball well, scrambled brilliantly at times and generally looked a completely different player to the one we saw in Canada.
But McIlroy looked as though he went 15 rounds with Mike Tyson after he trudged off the ninth green.
Four bogeys and a double bogey saw the Northern Irishman sign for a 4-over 74 which, at the time, was eight strokes adrift of the lead.
McIlroy wasn't the only name to struggle. McIlroy's playing partner, Shane Lowry, saw red and later signed for a 79.
Let's take a look at some players that will be sweating the cut line on Friday afternoon in Pennsylvania...
Bryson DeChambeau
First round score: 73
Whilst it wasn't a disaster, the reigning champion would've undoubtedly wished for a better start.
DeChambeau, who was involved in a bizarre rules incident, turned in level par and struggled down the stretch.
Scottie Scheffler
First round score: 73
The World No.1 made too many sloppy mistakes and currently sits in a share of 50th place.
Tommy Fleetwood
First round score: 74
Came into the US Open confident with his game and did well to hang in there. The Englishman has work to do.
Matthew Fitzpatrick
First round score: 74
The 2022 US Open champion started with a birdie but followed that with five bogeys over his next 10 holes.
Birdies at the 17th and 18th will have given Fitzpatrick some confidence heading into round two.
Wyndham Clark
First round score: 74
The 2023 US Open champ started well but was undone by two double bogeys at the ninth and 18th.
Phil Mickelson
First round score: 74
Could tomorrow be Phil the thrill's farewell at the US Open?
The USGA stressed earlier in the week that they would not rule out offering Lefty an invite into the future.
That being said, they would like Mickelson to try and qualify.
Hideki Matsuyama
First round score: 74
Has been out of sorts for a while.
Cameron Smith
First round score: 75
Missed cuts at The Masters and PGA Championship.
He has plenty to do if he wants to play the weekend.
Dustin Johnson
First round score: 75
It looks like it will be three missed cuts in a row for the former champion unless his fortunes improve drastically.
Joaquin Niemann
First round score: 75
The in-form LIV Golf man is struggling once again in a major.
Justin Thomas
First round score: 76
In truth, Thomas did well to limit the damage but will need a strong round two.
Patrick Cantlay
First round score: 76
Has been out of sorts for a while and it doesn't look like his fortunes will change anytime soon.
Jason Day
First round score: 76
The Australian was forced to skip the Memorial last week with an injury and it looks as though the former World No.1 could be heading home early.
Tony Finau
First round score: 76
The PGA Tour fan-favourite tried out putting one-handed recently such are his confidence levels on the greens.
Justin Rose
First round score: 77
Rose has struggled since he lost to the aforementioned McIlroy at The Masters.
Shane Lowry
First round score: 79
Had it not been for a hole-out eagle at the third hole then Lowry could've been looking at an even higher number.
What is the projected cut?
The last time the US Open was played at Oakmont, in 2016, the 36-hole cut was 6-over par.
For the US Open at Oakmont in 2007, the cut was a staggering 10-over.
The top 60 and ties will make the cut at the 2025 US Open.
At the time of writing, the cut line is 4-over par but is more than likely to change.
