Espiche: A new golf venue on the Algarve

Portugal’s Algarve coast now boasts another course to add to its quality portfolio of destinations golfers might visit when considering this hot spot for a holiday or group trip.

Espiche Golf Course near the bustling town of Lagos, opened in January and already looks a mature course overlooking the Atlantic coast just a short drive from Faro airport.

Designed and developed by South African golf architect Peter Sauerman, Espiche is an 18-hole, par-72 course with undulating terrain, lakes, sprawling woodland and views of the Monchique Mountains.

Espiche is offering something different with its sustainable, eco-friendly approach which means that the environment has been considered when creating the layout and managing the course.

The natural landscape of the Western Algarve is the main focus, with pine trees, wetlands and hilly terrain presenting a nine or 18-hole challenge close to the natural spa waters of Caldas de Monchique, which have been attracting visitors since Roman times.

Introductory green fee prices are €35 for 18 holes - or €25 for nine - with buggy hire from €15. Juniors aged 15 and under are charged half price.

The clubhouse is still under construction but the nearby town provides plenty of amenities including a zoo. The course is on the EN125 and towards Barao de Sao Joao signposted Lagos Zoo and recommended local hotels include the 4-Star Estrela da Luz, which has a wine and tapas bar, spa and a free bus service to local golf courses and the town centre.
