Jon Rahm remains in contention to become the first three-time winner of the acciona Open de Espana after 36 holes as England's Paul Waring and Stephen Gallacher shared the lead at 12-under.

Rahm opened his week with a 7-under 64 at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid with a round that contained an eagle, six birdies and one bogey.

He failed to go even lower than that today but finds himself only two shots adrift of the leaders after a second round of 68 that contained six birdies again but he dropped shots at No. 5, 10 and 11.

"Any time you have the chance to put your name on a list that has Seve on it is really incredible, Rahm, who won this event in 2018 and 2019, told the media. "I don't want to think about it too much but it would be a dream come true."

Waring had the low round  of the day (63) that contained as many as 10 birdies, only dropping shots at No. 5 and 13.

Gallacher was only two shots worse than Waring in this DP World Tour event, that is playing alongside the Shriners Children's Open on the PGA Tour and LIV Golf Bangkok, where England's Richard Bland took the shock early lead in Thailand.

However, Phil Mickelson provided one of the most incredible moments of the day when he holed a huge putt at Stonehill.

After the first round concluded, much of the talk was yet again about the topic of world ranking points.

Both Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka complained of the decision to not immediately reward LIV the points they desperately require.
