Aaron Rai won the PGA Championship with a driver you can get for less than £200

TaylorMade's drivers from the late 2010s remain enduringly popular to this day. Rory McIlroy has spoken in interviews about his fondness for the M2, saying he sometimes wishes he could still keep it in the bag.
However one new Major champion actually still does have some weaponry from that golden era of TaylorMade drivers in the bag right now. Newly-crowned PGA Champion Aaron Rai put on a masterclass at Aronimink en route to his maiden major win, doing so with a seven-year-old TaylorMade M6 driver in the bag.
The owner of one of the PGA Tour's most famously eclectic bags, Rai has used the M6 pretty much since its release, and is able to do so because he remains an equipment free agent, meaning he isn't obligated to play more modern clubs like TaylorMade's roster of staff players.
He has, however, tweaked the set-up of the driver from time to time, most recently switching it out its Mitsubishi Diamana White shaft for an Aldila Synergy Blue.
Rai's win is, interestingly, the second in as many weeks for TaylorMade's vintage drivers. As Golf.com gear insider Jack Hirsh points out in the tweet above, Brandt Snedeker won last week's Myrtle Beach classic using an even older TaylorMade M2.
Rai's performance with the M6 well and truly puts paid to the theory that you need the latest and greatest tech to deliver results at the very highest level of the game.
Aronimink's tight fairways and deep rough claimed countless victims over the weekend, however Rai prevailed in no small part thanks to his enduring consistency with the big stick. He ranked fourth in driving accuracy over the weekend, sits fourth on Tour for accuracy through the season, and last year was the tour's second-most accurate driver.
