Jason Day's equipment odyssey continues with switch into a seven-year-old driver
The Aussie's latest move is the last thing we were expecting.

Former PGA Champion Jason Day has emerged as one of golf's great tinkerers throughout 2025.
The Aussie has shown an affinity for supporting newer, more progressive brands since leaving his contracts with Nike and TaylorMade a couple of years back, and inching ever closer to a proper return to form for the first time since his days as the world number 1, has been avidly experimenting with a range of different clubs to push himself back into the winners circle.
Day made headlines back in October when he took to the course at the Bank of Utah championship with just 13 clubs in his bag, also introducing a new set of Avoda irons and a Callaway utility wood into his set-up.
Now, as reported by Golf.com's Jack Hirsh, the equipment free agent has made yet another switch – albeit not one we would have predicted in a million years. It concerns his driver, where he has swapped out his previous gamer, PING's G440 LST, for something far less orthodox in 2025.
His weapon of choice for Grant Thornton Invitational over the weekend? The TaylorMade M5: a club not seen on tour, nor in shopfronts, since the heady days of 2019.
Last we saw Jason Day, he had just added new Avoda Golf irons and a Callaway Apex UW to his bag. That's when he was playing just 13 clubs in Utah.

This week, he's got a seven-year-old TaylorMade M5 driver in the bag! Was last in a Ping G440 LST.
Hell yea! My favorite driver of… pic.twitter.com/ttaGMpSoEc
Exactly why Day is putting the M5 back into play now is anyone's guess – although it's worth mentioning that he did use the driver during his days as a TaylorMade staffer, so maybe it's a simple matter of craving the familiarity of the old.
Speaking prior to the event, Day said: "I haven't played for a while. I played Utah, which is about a month ago. Had to test some new clubs. Then I've had about another month off. So been just trying to get a handle on those clubs.
"It feels pretty good right now so I'm looking forward to a good week, trying to ease my way into the week."
Instagram account The Equipment Junkie followed up this revelation with an updated tour of Day's bag, getting insights from the player himself about his more recent switches. Also new to his bag for the Grant Thornton were a TaylorMade M6 3-wood, a Qi35 7-wood, a new set of Avoda Wedges, and an updated TaylorMade Spider Tour putter.
Day will likely face a few questions from the tour's resident gear nerds should the M5 remain in his bag, however it's not the only TaylorMade driver of that era to have seen tour-level play this year. Aaron Rai captured the HSBC Abu Dhabi Championship last month using the M6.
