At long last, Scotty Cameron has entered the (not quite) Zero Torque Putter Game

The brand's new pair of low-torque Onset Center putters are here to bring the fight to the likes of L.A.B Golf and Odyssey.

The absence of Scotty Cameron from the Zero Torque putter segment – a sector of the equipment market that's growing with rapid pace – has always felt like a fairly purposeful decision on the part of the iconic brand. One always got the impression that when they did enter the category, they'd do so on their own terms – and do it right.

Now, that day has come, with Cameron announcing the launch of two new models aimed at putting Scotty's signature stamp on the low-torque trend. Called the OC (Onset Center) range, the release features two brand new putters that deliver a somewhat new take on the low-torque formula while retaining the shape and profile of Scotty's most beloved putters.

The range comes in the form of the Phantom 11R OC and Studio Style Fastback OC, updating both of the enduringly popular putter shapes with an onset centre shaft, drastically reducing torque and, theoretically at least, simplifying the putter stroke for players of every level. Scotty Cameron is very careful to emphasise that these are low, not zero torque putters, indicating that the studio believes some level of face rotation is desirable even when minimising torque as much as possible.

“In the last few years, we’ve seen a growing number of golfers who want to minimise the feel of face rotation in the stroke via putter setup,” says Austie Rollinson, Scotty Cameron’s Senior Director of Putter R&D. “And as a designer, what excites me most about OC is that it gives golfers options. We now have an entirely new configuration for golfers who want to feel a square, straight-back-and-through path.”

Scotty Cameron has learned from the last few years of zero torque putter evolution to cater for the ever-shifting demands of customers in the segment. The OC range has just one degree of shaft lean, allaying a bugbear of many early zero torque players who struggled to get used to the way they looked at address. Both also have 15-gram heavier head weights and custom shafts, designed to create a greater sense of feel throughout the putting stroke.

While the putters have a sleek silver and black colour scheme to denote their place as part of an entirely new range for the brand, much of what's made Scotty's modern putters so beloved over the last decade or so remains.

Both OC models have the same chain-link milling pattern on the face (the Phantom is equipped with its usual Studio Carbon Steel (SCS) face insert), delivering a soft and luxurious sensation at impact without sacrificing feedback. Each head is also milled from 303 stainless steel and 6061 aircraft aluminium for optimal weight balance and a perfect finish.

The Scotty Cameron Onset Center putter line will be available in golf shops worldwide on Friday, November 14, with an RRP of £499. You can learn more at Scotty Cameron's website.
